A lot of people have voted for the 10D, but nobody has mentioned so far the 10D's inability to use EF-S lenses.
If you enjoy using wide-angle lenses, because of the 1.6x crop factor of both the Digital Rebel and 10D all your lenses become more telephoto. The only ultra wide-angle available from Canon is the 10-22mm EF-S and you won't be able to use it with a 10D.
Personally, the fact that the 10D limits your lens selection would make me think about a 20D or the Digital Rebel, but that may not be important for you or you may find the various third-party lenses good enough for you.
In the end, the image quality from the 10D and Digital Rebel will be similar but the 10D will understandably be better built and have a few more features (with the exception of EF-S lens compatibility).

The 10D out-performs the original digital Rebel in terms of build quality, features and speed. Image quality is about equal. They both had a 1.6 crop, 6MP sensor with great ISO up to 1600. I'd get the 10D.
Compared to the Rebel XT, the 10D still offers better build quality and features, but the Rebel XT was much less sluggish than the original Rebel. I don't know how the Rebel XT and 10D compare directly in terms of AF-speed, etc. The Rebel XT probably has better image quality due to the new 8MP sensor and the 10D's iffy white balance. I personally dislike the small and fragile feel of the Rebel XT, but that would be my choice.

I don't know about the Canon 10d, but I have a Canon Digital Rebel and I love it. The only thing I don't love about it is that it's too big and heavy and difficult to take places, but it takes the BEST photos - instant shutter speed, great photos of moving subjects and even great in low light.
I'd look at Consumer Reports reviews or epinions.com and see what they say.

10d is better in many terms as compared to the rebel. naturally 10d is the way to go. but the newer generation of the 10d is the 30d. get it and i wish you happy shooting.
