Im going to answer this on the presumption that you believe this is a true event. When God created man he created us in his image but gave us free will to do our own choosing.Instead of thinking of this as a true event think of it as a metaphor for life. We are given the choice to do what we want, but God wishes we would follow in his image.Ultimately we do have the choice as did Adam and Eve. Human nature itself goes against everything that is taught in the Bible.

Here is the situation, God gives you the power of free will, He did not force man or woman to eat from the tree. There was not sin, he put the tree there as a way for man to show him that they would not disobey him.

God is the only one that knows exactly why sin is running around in the world today, but I do know that God gives us a choice between good and evil because He wants those that choose good to love Him out of the own desire of their hearts. He doesn't want us to be forced into serving Him because all we know is His goodness, minus His wrath upon sinful deeds. God doesn't want robotic followers. I do know though that there's a simple remedy to sin - faith in Christ. Why question evil and sin when it's only for God to know? He offers free salvation from an eternity in Hell, why not accept it? Why dwell on the fact that sin is rampant when there is a cure? I believe, my friends, we're always asking the wrong questions.

I've asked pastors that for years, when I still was a half-assed believer. But, atheism just makes more sense than a cruel god.

When reading fiction you can not ask why, if the answer is not in the story. Nothing exists outside of the story.

For much the same reason that He gives you the opportunity to accept Him as your savior or live for Satan.
