It depends on so many things. Do you have kids? A fence? Work all day? Live near a busy road? Want a small or med dog?
I have had several dogs. Currently my Bernese Mountain Dog and my poodle mix are fabulous. One is big, the other medium.
Personally, I love yorkies best...aside from my two. They are lap dogs, highly intelligent, will follow you everywhere, put up with kids. But they run off. And I mean forget stopping them for any reason, they just GO. FAST.
Shihtzus are great dogs. They are not always the best choice with kids. Great dogs, very loving.

They can... but be careful with children. While any dog can be friendly... My experience is that if you have small children, a shitzu may not be the right choice, yet. They don't like to be tearsed or have their hair pulled on...

Depends on the temperament of the dog and how you treat him or her. Our dog was the best one we had but she was a bit nervy and snapped at people everytime they tried to stroke her (well, we did warn them), but this was because we trained her to 'see people' off everytime they walked past our window, so that might have had something to do with it! Our dog was also extremely untrustyworthy when it came to food! Apart from that, she was as soppy as anything and would let you do almost anything to her. She was also extremely loving, especially when it was time for walking! She was also extremely intelligent and could be taught tricks extremely quickly (if she wanted to, yes she could be stubborn).
In contrast, our friend's Shih-tzu was as quiet as anything, good (if fussy with food-they only fed him on lambs hearts and stuff like that) and absolutely adored children (this is why we bought our dog) and was very calm on the lead. He also loved playing with the ball (as did our dog). However, he wasn't quite as intelligent as our dog!
Both dogs were also very good when left alone (although our dog did chew the bottom of our cabinets when she was a very young puppy) and were content with as many walks as we could give them (either long or short;often or less often-but I'd advise at least once a day, if possible), so Shih-tzus are good if you don't have a lot of time to exercise them.
To sum up, I'd say Shih-tzus are fantastic pets to have but think about issues like temperament, food, anxiety, amount of care you're prepared to give them and social skills (I suspect our dog would have been better with people, especially children, if she'd spent more time around them as a puppy), BEFORE you buy the dog. Don't worry about the hair! As long as you get it cut regularly by a good dog groomer (e.g. at least every 2 months)it's not too much of a problem, and they don't moult as much as other breeds (fur is more like hair than pelt), so Shih-tzus may also be better for allergy sufferers! Shih-tzus are also extremely loyal (and funny), as long as you look after them properly!
Good luck & enjoy your new friend!

Yes they do with early on training. They do lose quite a bit of hair tho. We have a maltese (which dont lose hair, only in the brush when u brush them) crossed with a shihtzu - hes the sweetest dog, and fantastic with our 2 yo twins. Even when im pulling on his hair brushing him he has never tried to bite. My husb doesnt like dogs but he loves ours! (Re: shih tzu) in my book it says "This dog is gentle & gets along well with children as long as it is treated carefully. Ideal House pet even in an urban high rise"

We had a rescue Shih tzus and she was beautiful, very calm temperament and really good with children too, she was so cute and funny too and lived to the ripe old age of 18, I would say they do make good pets.

The long coat needs completely combing out every day, no excuses. It can take an hour. Use a comb and a hairbrush and start when they're pups to get them used to it.
Although small and cute looking they're still dogs, so go to puppy training classes.

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.

They can. But you are better of with a Golden.
**** Tzu's are a lapdog and are hard to train, can yap alot.
If you are wanting a lapdog yes but again, you are going to be more satistied with a Golden.
Goldens are laid back, easy to train, loyal, quiet, etc.
Hope this helps!

Dont listen to that person who says Shihtzus shed....they're one of the few dogs on the list of non-shedders. I had one for 15 years and they're so sweet, easy going, mine was great with everyone, including kids. They love to lay next to you but dont need constant attention....they're the perfect mix of loveable but not too needy.

Yes. they are such loveable doggies and so cute. I have questions, though, if they would be good pets for little kids. ...the doggies(small ones) tend to be less tolerant of little kids than bigger dogs, i.e. labradors, collies, etc
