Ok..so this guy I have been talking too for some time now (3 mos) tells me last night that he suffers from bi-polar disorder as well as OCD. He stated that these mental health disorders run in his family and I believe when we spoke the otherday, he was actually expriencing a "Low". He said that he will be seeking help from a doctor within the week and possibly be placed on medication. My thing is..I like this man, and we could potentially get serious. I just don't know if I should continue to engage him as a result of this new revelation. I know a lot about these disorders b/c I went to school for it, and it can get bad if left untreated. I've seen the epidsodes of Oprah! I don't want to seem shallow, and I know a good guy is hard to find, but if it run's in his family, that means he could pass it on to our potential children. I really don't have much invested in him at this point, but I know I could. He's really a sweet man. Should I stay and find out, or just move on??

Stay and find out.
1.He was honest enough to tell you up front(that's a good sign)
2. If you know alot about these disorders then you may be better equipped to handle the rough times because you could discern between the illness and the man(so to speak)
3.THere is no guarantee that your children will get the same thing just as there is no guarantee that they will not.
4.At least going into this thing, you know what you're dealing with
5., He may just be your guy.....why not give it a try?
6. If it does not work you may have made a great friend with a sweet guy.

I have OCD and I have children and as a parent I have done the research....if you have four kids, those kids have a 1 in 4 chance of having OCD as opposed to not having a parent with OCD...so the chances are 25% therefore that your child would have OCD...I have five and none of them present signs of OCD and mine began early...I know that doesn't necessarily mean they will never get it but I also realize that the fact that I had OCD didn't mean I wasn't entitled to have a family either....I suffer from other health problems as well.....depression, etc and they are fine....

I think to say that because you watched some stupid show on Oprah that now you are questioning whether or not this man is worthy of your time...you said it yourself....he's a good guy. So why not give him a chance? Alot of people have mental disorders and I think it is sad that many of them spend their lives alone because of people like you who stigmatize them, Would you stay away from a person because they were diabetic? No, I didn't think so.....He told you he was going to seek treatment and treatment in itself is a hard process and needs support from loving people so you need to decide if you are capable of being a loving, supportive partner because if you are not than it is in HIS best interest for you to move on.....

My wife is Bipolar. She was diagnosed with it about 5 years ago. We have only been married 2 months. I would have to say that she has done very well with it. She goes every 3 months to her doctor and gets a check up and I take a vitamin at night when she takes her meds. The problem she had was here mother did not ever take her to the doctor when she was having episodes. My wife is 33. So she used to get drunk all the time and would not take care of herself. But she has turned her life around and getting the help that she needs. My advise would I would not be afraid to get in a relationship with someone who is Bipolar if they take there meds and get check ups frequently. That is a problem that they cannot help. They did not go out and get it. I tell her that and she understands it. But hang in there and I hope nothing but the best for you.

Kurt Cobain was bipolar. Most alcoholics are bi polar who are not treated. Yes left untreated its horrible disease. There is a good chance that even with treatment that his body will not react or could build a tolorance. I think you should try. It is hard but there is also a good chance that his treatments will be sucessful if he keeps it up. As far as his OCD usually it is once particular thing they are compulsive about. It could be as simple as counting steps when you walk on them. OR making a bed with even sides of the blanket hanging off the edges. And that can be work through. Bipolar is a bit more difficult to deal with.

Don't listen to all the crap about lookin' past people's issues and loving them for them, etc... Love is cool and all, but in the real world couples have issues and bi-polarism :-) isn't fun and can cause problems in the future. Why put yourself through that nonsense. And seeing as how it runs in the family, do you really want to have your children go through that kind of life ???

The problem with it is that they generally stop taking their meds, always with a 'very good reason'. Usually when they are on a manic high. I was married to a bi polar man for 21 yrs. It is VERY DIFFICULT.

I agree, get out now. Bi-polar is no fun. If you got married, had children your gets would be screwed up as well. Bi-Polar is very much part of heredity. Run Now.
