It hurts a little bit when they stick the needle in, and a little more when they take it out, but there's no lasting pain.

It all depends upon how much tolerance for pain you have. If a pin prick or a small pinch really doesn't affect you, neither will giving blood. I have donated blood many times and the only thing that I feel is when the nurse initially puts the needle in my arm. It doesn't necessarily hurt, but there is a tingly sensation for a few seconds that is unlike anything else you will ever feel. When you are actually pumping out blood, your arm can feel like it's falling asleep or it will get a little tired from squeezing the stress ball they make you hold on to. After giving blood they will bandage you properly and it will feel like normal.
If the sight of needles freaks you out, make sure you turn your head when the nurse inserts the needle into your arm.
If anything I would just suggest that you relax during the process, just take deep breaths and realize it is a short process. The needle will only be in you for about 5 to 10 minutes.
Best Wishes!

There is an initial stick obviously when they put the needle in but it only sticks. It doesn't hurt or anything. You don't "feel" anything as you give blood. You might feel a little shaky if you get up too fast or something afterwards. But do things slowly and the satisfaction of knowing you helped someone else in future is a great feeling.

Goon on ya mate!

I've been on both ends - giving and receiving.

I'm proud to have been able to give blood in the past. Unfortunately, I can't do it now because of the medication I'm on, post operations but I'm grateful that blood was readily available when I needed it.

In the UK the donation of blood is entirely voluntary and unpaid and |I hope it stays that way.

It is an enormous privilege to be able to help others and any small amount of any discomfort is soon gone. Besides, where else would you get such a welcome cup of tea!

well it's not that bad, only if u are scared of needles which i am. the only thing you feel is a tiny pinch once the needle goes in, not too bad, that's the worst of it. The other thing you might feel is when they start drawing the blood out, you might feel a "drawing sensation", feels like it's draining you, but it's temporary. You regain your blood really fast and there are people there to take care of you if u faint or are squirmish..plus u get some sweets at the end. hope this helps. good luck!

You know when you get a blood test the nurse sticks a needle in your arm and fills up bottles of blood from the needle in your arm well thats what they do the only difference is you may save a life and get a cup of tea after.
It does hurt but not big time

depends if you get a ***** of a nurse like i did!!! after getting the thumb test they decided i was a bit anaemic and got sent up the stair to have a blood sample taken for analysis where she jabbed me with a huge big thick needle, now being a nurse myself i informed her that this may well be the wrong size needle for the occasion wherby she replied by saying oh well ,a nurse?,well now you know how everyone else feels an carried on jabbing away at my now battered an bruised left arm!!! lets say that was the last time i gave blood!

It only hurts as much as you think it hurts!

I have donated blood twice for emergency & family situations, I hate needles and tend to get woozy, but I try to have a book with me and eat all the cookies and juice that they want to give me to distract myself from thinking about the needle.

There's a sharp scratch as the needle pierces the skin - you just grit your teeth and turn your head away - after that its fine. I was a blood donor for over 30 years (I gave 75 pints) - if it was excruciatingly painful every time, why would I put myself through that torture?

No, Ben go for it it is well worth the effort and see if you can get your (emerald) badge as I did.

As many others have said, it does hurt a little - but really only a little bit. When I gave (last Friday) I happened to notice a section in the instructions which says:

"We do not routinely give local anaesthetics to donors. However, any donor that wants one will be given it if they ask."

So if you're really worried, get that. But DO give - the lasting feeling is satisfaction.
