Yes very!
They have a really bad rep cause of films and the media, but if you buy them from a reputable breeder who breeds them as pets and not as guard dogs you'll be fine.
My doberman pup is 17 weeks old and he is fantastic, i have a miniature pinscher as well and they get along like brothers despite the obvious size difference.
All animals make great pets if you train them the right way.

Yes and no. They are usually very sweet, but they are incredibly needy and require strenuous daily exercise.Dobies are athletes - when full grown, you'll need to take them for daily thirty minute runs, not just a casual walk around the block.
They are very smart dogs that hate to be left alone. Dobies with separation anxiety can destroy your house or jump thru a window - I've seen one chew a hole entirely through an interior wall to get out of the room he was locked in.
They need early obedience training and constant activity to keep their brains occupied! This is not a good breed to get if you've never trained a dog before.
Find a good breeder referral by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. This is a breed that can have health and aggression problems - you should get the best one you can!

You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

yes they do if trained preoperly. Dobermanns do have a tendency to become 'attached' to a certain member of a household and guard them....Thses dogs need an enormous amount of excercise just like any working breed. But they are loyal and tender. Just be sure to get a dog from a good breeder who has had the b1tch and dog screened for elbow and hip dysplacia and always be sure to watych out for bloat which is quite prevailent in this breed. eg dont excercise the dog until at least an hour after being fed. If not the stomach can become contorted and if not caught early can cause death. But if you can do all of this an offer a godd home...yes. great dogs!

Hello.
We used to own a Doberman dog. He was a real sweetie. We contacted the Kennel club for a list of Doberman breeders in our local area. Which is always a good idea -- I think.
Good Luck.
ps They have lots of energy, and can be bouncy when young.

Same as a lot of animals, in the right home, yes.
Go to your local library or pet shop and read up on them. You'll learn most there what their needs are, what to expect, what to look out for - and from there you'll be better placed to tell whether a doberman is suitable for you (and whether you are suitable for a doberman).

Yes in the right home they do.
You have to be willing to put in training time with them. They are headstrong and very independant thinkers and they will take over and be the boss if they think you are not.
They can be very destructive and down right dangerous if not trained and socialized properly.
They need a lot of exercise and a walk once per day is not going to fill the bill. You will need to be albe to let the run and play rought and hard. It helps keep them calm in the house.
These dogs were bred as gaurd and personal protction dogs so be prepared for them to patrol the house and get aggressive with strangers and ohters who do not live in the home. They are not usually real friendly with people outside the home.

Absolutely. I currently have a 18 month old pup and a 6 year old. These two comprise a total of 5 that I have been fortunate enough to share my life with.
Frankly, I'd never have another breed.

Any pet makes a good pet aslong as they are brought up well.
Sometimes they are the exeption to that but it normally down to in-bred problems and can't be changed.

Yes but you have to firm with them. The thing about dogs like dobies is that if they turn, they're going to do a lot of damage. So, when you are sure he knows who is boss, you can start showing him more affection.
