I've seen it done on home improvement shows, but I don't know what kind of paint.
BUT, did you know that to remove wall paper all you need to do is pour a lilttle fabric softener in some hot water and wet down the wall? It just peels right off.
GOOD LUCK!!

Don't paint over wallpaper. This is a painting SIN. Unless the wall behind it is decrepit and will crumble if you remove the paper, just deal with the removal process and paint on the wall (sheet rock/dry wall). The person a couple of answers before me is right; paper is an imperfect painting surface and your paint job will look like crap eventually. It really pays off to remove the wall paper and sand down the walls so you have the best surface possible. The results will be great and if you don't like the color it will make the NEXT paint job look great, too.

If you really, really, really have to paint over wallpaper, use a good primer first - the people at Home Depot or Lowe's can point one out for you. Then just use regular latex paint.

You can but if you want a decent finish that is not going to looky crappy in a few years then you've got to take the wallpaper off. You can rent wallpaper strippers by the day and they'll allow you to get the job done in no time at all. If you do just want to get painting then make sure you use a good primer first and put down at least a couple of generous coats. once the primer is on and dried, the sky's your limit, have fun.

This is one of those 'yes, but' situations. If you prime to keep the finish coat from soaking in, and if the paper is in good shape (any place it has a seam or a pattern that is raised or lowered will show through) and even then you may not be happy with the results. Go rent a steamer and remove the wall paper, prepare the surface to be painted, prime and paint. In the long run you will be much happier.

Sometimes when painting on wallpaper, it will come apart because of the moisture in the paint. They have a special primer you can use to prevent that from happening. Use paint according to room, for example if it's a bathroom, the use bath and kitching etc.

if the paper starts to come off, then look for the primer and apply that first, otherwise you're all set.

I don't know what kind of paper it is, but my friend bought textured wallpaper specifically designed for painting over. She put it up and then when she went to paint over it, it stayed put but it bubbled up and looked awful. That being said, you might get away with sealing the paper first with a paint sealant and then painting over it with latex. If its vinyl paper it will have to go! I would check with the folks at home depot for your best solution. There's nothing worse than working so hard only to have it look worse than when you started. Good luck!

You can definitely paint over secure wallpaper. Go to Home Depot and talk to the paint specialist! Have Fun!

Lowes and Home Depot both sell this textured paint that dries to look like slate-rock. It's very expensive but it's so thick that it covered some imperfections in my wall, and it woudl certainly cover-up wallpaper. Of course, always get the advice of the people working in the paint section. They are usually very knowlegable and can suggest the best solutions.

you can, but it looks like crap and eventually, the wallpaper is still going to warp and peal with age causing the paint to crack. also the weight of the paint will begin to pull the paper down as it ages and the glue peals making it look as if your walls are bowing.
Take the extra time and remove the wallpaper first. It will be worth the effort.
