No real physical difference at all. Only you know if you never had intercourse or not, so most guys can and do lie about having had sex before they ever really hit a home run. Girls are virgins until penetration, since there is a hymen (thin membrane) in place across the vagina that is torn or ruptured upon first intercourse. So in history you read about virgins, and it always refers to girls. Probably only recently was the term used for guys-and as you say, means nothing at all. We can do the same thing solo as with a partner, though it is more fun and better to brag about with a girl.
