Hey Richard,
Here are some web sites. If you could narrow down the search a little, it would help. Lanier Family could be anywhere in the world. I don't put much faith in the family crest sites, but thought you might be interested. They will charge for their information.
Hope this helps you start. For every answer in Genealogy, there are two more questions! Every person you find, has parents, and history. The powers of 2 are at play - Lanier is only one of the branches of your ancestry.

What exactly are you asking?
Lanier can be either English or French. It was taken to England by the Normans in one form, but also was an Anglo-Saxon name for someone who worked with wool cloth, like a weaver or tailor.
If you're looking for where they were in America, you're going to have to look it up. Do your family tree, that sort of thing. No one here's going to have enough info to go on. You could try ancestry.com, genealogy.com, rootsweb.com, and myfamily.com. They're all genealogy sites. If you have far enough back, try Ellis Island records, also available online, for their immigration. You can also look up just the name on Google; sometimes there are plenty of sites from people already researching the name.
