There are special pet clippers you have to buy at the vet. They aren't too expensive and they work a lot better than human clippers! They are like human nail clippers but they have a hole. You put the nail into the hole and when you press the clipper arms together, the hole gets smaller until it surrounds the nail and cuts it off evenly around its circumference.
Whatever you do, DO NOT cut too short!! Never go past the pink part. If possible, cut as little as you can (just dull the ends to make the nails less sharp if that's what you're going for.) The biggest mistake that people make is cutting too low. There is actually flesh that starts growing a little bit down, and if you cut that, it will start bleeding not to mention it will hurt your poor doggy! I think it's where the light pink part starts. Try not to go past it.
Good luck!

Use dog trimmers for the size of the dog and carefully cut to the quick- if you look closely, it is the tiny groove towards the base of the nail. You don't want to cut past this because that's where the nerves start and can bleed very badly if cut too short. If you can't do it, have a friend do it that knows or take them to a vet or groomer.

get dog clippers... if you are not comfortable with doing it, i would recommend taking your dog to the groomer or vet to have it done... you have to be careful not to cut into the quick (dog's jerk a lot when their feet are messed with) and if your dog has black nails, i wouldn't cut much off of them (on a regular basis, take off little by little the keep them at a safe length) if you do not cut your dogs nails for a long time, the quick will grow out as well and becomes more of a hassle... if you do cut into the quick, have baking soda handy to put directly onto the wound (will bleed a lot and this should stop the bleeding) if you can not stop it, take your dog to the vet to have properly treated (will become infected...)
hope all goes well and good luck, sorry you were kicked off of here...

you need to purchase a pair of dog nail clippers....if ur dog has light coloured nails u will b able to see the pink quick if u hold the nail up to the light....do not cut it there or it will bleed. The best thing to do is simply trim a small amount off the end, unless of course they are really long then obviously u will need to cut more.

Do you have a small breed or large breed? I have small breed dogs so I use a cat nail clipper instead. Its much easier for me and less fearful for my dogs to see me holding a big-ol nail clipper for a small tiny nail. Also, do not attempt to trim just right above the vein if your pet twitches you might miss and end up in a blood bath, I know. Been there. Its better to trim it again then to go thru the whole blood bath thing.

I use my electric nail file on my dog, you know, the battery ones you can get with the round discs..
works a treat and no risk of the nail splitting or you cutting down too far!
if your dogs a scaredy and does not like the noise use dog nail clippers.
most dogs of they are walked on tarmac as part of their daily walk will only need a small amount taking off as the tarmac wears them down

i dont because I walk them on hard ground enought to keep the nails down, which is how it should be
However if for some reason u cant do this, look at the nail u will see it got a 'smaller' nail in it, darker? cut their nail but DONT touch this part, it will hurt them. A bit like biting ur nail so low it hurts?
If ur dog loves u it will let u do it, under duress, but seriously, if you walk your dog on hard ground like pavement, it will take care of itself.

If they are black it is best that you get the vet to do it. If they are pink then just the tip. You will be able to see the nail bed so dont get too close otherwise lots of blood and very painful for the dog.

i use dog nail clippers, follow the instructions on where the "quick" is and you'll be fine. My one dog is very good and just sniffs and licks my hands while I'm doing his nails, the other one jumps and runs away! so i wait til she's sleeping sound and trim them! sometimes she wakes up in the middle of cutting them and gives me such a dirty look.

you should be able to obtain a good pair of cat or small dog nail clippers from your local pet store. set her in your lap facing away from you, hold her firmly on the head, and make sure you cover her head with a cloth of some sort, make sure its not over her whole face only her eyes. hold her first pay, use your 2nd finger from your thumb to push toe up, and knip away real quick, make sure that you dont get her blood vessel. good luck!!
