I repeat it's name over and over again, it's a fairly clever puppy from what I see. And is it too young to learn tricks like 'sit'?

About a week or less. Border Collies are VERY smart. Begin motivational puppy training immediately. Don't listen to people who tell you that you have to wait until they are six months old - by then it's way too late. (Would you send your child off to his first day of school when he's 13??) You can start puppy training as soon as you get her. Begin with housebreaking and teaching her to come, sit and lie down. Gently guide her into doing what you want - then praise her for following you and reward her with treats. There is no reason to yell or be rough with a young puppy.

These are the books that I recommend to my students; you can get them on Amazon.com

As they get older, Border Collies require a LOT of exercise, and preferably a job to do or they can be insane to live with. We're talking at least two thirty-minute STRENUOUS runs every day as adults, not a casual 3 mph walk around the block. Many Border Collies end up in the pound because people can't deal with their herding instincts and odd behavior (like herding and nipping the kids and guarding stuffed animals!)

First of all, congratulations on whoever owns the dogs on becoming Backyard Breeders, having more healthy dogs/puppies be killed off in shelters and such.. 2nd of all, no dog should be taken away before 8 weeks so it learns proper socialization skills with her litter mates.. 9-10 weeks would be better to get the pup. Add: 1)The female was found off the street (so it doesn't matter what the father was, no matter how "pure' or what due to the fact there is nothing on female, I doubt the proper health screenings were done on either of them too). 2) She gonna get all the puppies fixed before selling them to prevent more litters? People can put up a fronts too, and more can and will just end up on the street.. Its like a never ending cycle. The parents should be fixed too. I dont need to say anymore..

It should take maybe 2 days for him to learn his name. Border Collies are smart dogs. You should be able to teach him to sit without too much trouble. I have an eight week old lab pup, who knows her name, plays fetch, and is learning to sit on command.

Give yourself some time....you'll remember it after a while.

Seriously though....don't expect much from puppies (even brilliant BC's)...by the time it's a couple months old it should figure it out. One warning....do NOT shout the dog's name when reprimanding it. That will cause the dog to associate its name with getting in trouble.
Tricks are probably best to try in a couple weeks.

How long it takes him to learn anything will depend on how much work you put into it. If you use his name frequently and always follow it immediately with something good (treats, petting, etc.) he will learn that hearing his name means to look to you.

No, it's not too early to begin teaching him tricks. It is best to start now, actually, before he learns too many bad behaviors. Get the idea into his brain now that responding to you brings rewards for him.

Play.

Start learning tricks after at least 12 weeks. It has got to learn 'it's place' first. The name will sink in in no time.

Please go to the library and get a book (he has several) by an animal behaviorist/Vet named Dr. Michael Fox. His books are very good at explaining why animals behave certain ways and how to incorporate it into their training. Also the books by the Monks from New York. They have been training dogs for decades at their monastery. Learn more about your dog before too many bad habits are allowed to form.

he should learn his name in a day or 2, and you should be able to make him sit with treats in the same amount of time.. but remember dont be cruel by yelling or hitting him otherwise he will become scared of you..
