I advise a dome tent. Easy to put up, and a 9ft will cost about $75. You can get by with just blankets, unless you expect low temps. Add a couple flashlights, and you are good to go.

I love camping but I have had some bad trips when we went ill prepared. You need a sleeping bag but also very important is plastic or air mattress for under the sleeping bag or you'll get wet. It is so important to take some warm clothes as the nights get cold. They have some inexpensive 2 sleeper tents...going to any place that sells tents, you'll see. Make sure you take mosquito repellant or get bit alive. Things other than that...cooler with foods that dont perish easily, camp pots, dishes, dish cloth, teatowels, facecloths, towels, soap, depending on who cooks..maybe a camp stove, flashlight is a must, I like to take a pillow but of course that isn't a must....in the scout handbook, there is a list for camping and it all makes sense...the first time is costly but this stuff is reusable for years. Have fun..it's a blast:)

There are a lot of great tents on the market today that go up a lot easier then the tents of a few years ago. get a dome tent those are easy to put up. an air matterss even the kind that you can get for a dollar or two for the pool will make the hard ground feel a lot better. Good luck! Do not spray bug spray onyour tent it can break down the ability to fend off the water if it rains. take a small broom to sweep the tent out before you take it down.

I would recommend going to campmor.com it has a lot of sales but if not you can always try coleman.
What you need: 2 pairs of socks per day at least, Clothes for each day, if your camping late september to early april then a sleeping bag rated to -15 or -10 degrees, a sleeping pad, a tent (I prefer 2 person unless you want your entire family in one tent, a lantern (battery or propane),flashlight, water and duct tape

You will need a good tent with a rain cover. We got our at Wal Mart. You will need
good insulated sleeping bags
a lantern
a "bath bag" with towels and other bathroom supplies (if they have a bath house)
matches
fire starter (if you want)
bug spray
sunscreen
I like the little hot dog cooker they have
a cooler with drinks and food
marsh mellows and other stuff for smores
camp chairs
a hammer to put the tent up
Oh Wal Mart has a family combo pack with the tent, sleeping bags, a lantern and chairs all for $50. We bought it at the beginning of the year for $100. The tent is easy to put together.
Have fun!

the best sleeping bags are mummy bags that get smaller at the feet and go around your head. Most tents are good I would suggest Eureka! tents they are high quality. ALso remember to but a tarp under the tent when you set it up so ground water won't make you wet. If you are not anxious about sleeping on the ground get a Therma-rest . These keep you warmer and are comfy and decomprese so they don't take up much room. Try going to campmor.com

Depends on if you want to be a cadillac camper, or a roughing it camper. I prefer to be a cadillac camper so here is what we bring
(me and my wife)
8 man tent, air matress, 3 sleeping bags, screened in porch tent, gas coleman lantern, flourescent coleman lantern, 3 aim n flames, first aid kit including burn cream splinnter outs, and itch cream, clothes line, clothes pins, coleman stove, pots, pans, water bag, wash rags and towels, paper towels, table cloth(vynle), work gloves, air pump for matress, bateries, flash light, a little weber grill, match lite charcoal, instant coffee, a beverage cooler, a food cooler, a sewing kit (in case tent rips), can of lantern fuel, bug spray, bug coils, toilet paper, pillows, reading material, can "coolies", tongs, burger flippers, plates, etc. hammer, pliers, screwdriver, bleach, trash bags, 2 camping chairs, packets of sugar, salt and pepper, season salt, etc. dish soap, packaging tape,
This sounds like alot but most of this stuff is really small. We put all this stuff in three rubber maid totes, and can be comfortablly on our way camping in 10 minutes notice.
You can get all this at wal mart for cheap (minus the stove, and lanterns)

Don't forget to have fun!! Camping is a wonderful experience. I prefer backwoods camping, but for a first timer car camping would do. As long as you have shelter, food, and warmth everything will be fine. If someone in your family plays the guitar, I highly suggest bringing it along- campfire songs are so fun.

Check my 360 site for pix on how I do it
