Outside of using permanent color I don't know. My hair is greying too, I use permanent color but my problem is that my hair grows out fast. So in two weeks my roots are grey again. I just have to keep touching up, it's the price we pay to stay looking youthful. As far as the dryness. I had that problem in areas and I just started using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, (Neutrogena Triple Moisture) and every other week I use a deep condition and sit under the dryer for 20 minutes. It made a big difference in my hair. It's really healthy now. Good luck.

I am assuming you are caucasian. is your hair is dry because of the coloring then you need to buy a good conditioner to bring it back to normal. If you have normal dry hair then you need to use a shampoo for dry hair.
Thinning and greying as you age are normal. Realize that bald or partial bald is good looking too (as long as you don't have a comb-over). There are rinses that start bringing your hair color from dark to grey gradually. Grey/white make a guy distinguished looking (as long as you are not heavy).
Maybe you want to stay your dark hair color for a while longer..well you can use rinses. TV stars use a "kind of" shoe polish coloring to cover their new growth (it's specially made for this purpose), but then you would become over-conscious about your hair.
If you are concerned about thinning and if it is in a certain area (like up front) then you can get hair plugs. Be sure that you choose a doctor who had lots of experience doing that with much success.
Some people say that when they go on blood pressure medicine their hair grows back (although it's just fine hairs).

Are you taking your vitamins? Hair must be nourished from the inside out. It especially needs biotin, niacin, vitamins a, b6, c and zinc. As far as the scanty part, are you eating or drinking lot of anything with high fructose corn syrup? Like sodas? It will react with the cortisol (also spelled cortizol) in your body and will cause your hair to fall out, it can cause stress and belly fat as well.
It sounds like you might want to get your thyroid checked though. Dry and falling out together are one of the symptoms of thyroid gland malfunction.
I don't dye my hair, so sorry, I can't help you with the longer lasting part, but if your hair was naturally blond, pour cooled chamomile tea over it and sit in the sun for highlights. I have also heard of a girl using a rosemary (the herb, soaked in water,) rinse for red hair. (I will tell you, it had a "purplish" sheen to it though...in an odd way I liked it. And I'm not into weird hairdos either.)

Use semi-perm or demi-perm hair dyes that are salon quality, such as Redken Shades EQ. YES they are expensive but they are the best leaving your hair in fabulous condition/shiny and healthy.
Don't do the Henna. Some people are allergic to what's in Henna for some reason. It can also dry your hair and make it look red.
If you have too much hair to do highlights only, you will have to resort to the monthly dye jobs at the salon.

I suggest going to the salon and having highlights put in. Your hairdresser can use the right product for your hair. And it really does hide the grey. I think they suggest you do this like every 2 months or something but I'm a stay at home mom and can't afford it, I get mine done every six months and it keeps my hair from getting to light and it costs less. Good luck.

look mate i'm 10 years older than you are and i can tell you that dying your hair won't change a thing. I did it for a couple of years then took time out, forgot about dying my hair, went back to work. first thing they asked me was what it was i'd done because i looked so much younger. seriously. i had a look at old photographs and i did look weird with the dye on. get used to it and you can always use a rinse if you want to but really don't bother with hair dye
