And doesn't Jesus tell us not to worry about what we will eat and what we will wear? Why should we worry about it for the "poor" when God tells us to look and see that even the birds are taken care of?

Because Jesus told us to. It's our duty to love one another. He said that what ever you do for the least of them you do for me.

You are getting your words from Matthew 7;25-34. Zechariah 7;8-10 'Then the Word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying 9'Thus say the Lord of Hosts:
'Execute true justice, show mercy and compassion.
Everyone to his brother.
10 Do not oppress the widow or fatherless,
the alien or poor.
Let known of, you plan evil in his heart Against his brother."

James 2;5 listen my beloved brethren; Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in Faith and heirs of the Kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? But, you have dishonored the poor man."

We being the body of Christ , must be the arms and the hands to reach out to the poor and lost. Our money is a blessing from God, it is to be used as God intends. We should use it to His Glory. And yes, that means feeding the hungry, and the poor, the widow,Jesus said who that gives just a cup of water to the least of our brethren, will not lose his reward. If all Christians practiced this there would be no hunger in this land, nor the need for a welfare system.

Salam (Peace)!
Donating to the poor is our right. Because God has granted some so much and some very little, all that we have doesn't really belong to us. Our money, gold and wealth is not our own but it belongs to God so it is the rights of the poor that we share our wealth with them. If you keep your wealth that means you are keeping someone else's property with you. And since, this world is not paradise but a test for us, we must abide by God's rule by sharing. If everyone was to have all the wealth then there would be no point for existence here. We share so we can become grateful and have mercy towards our fellow brothers and sisters.
I hope you will understand inshallah (God Willing).
Take care.

This reminds me of a story they tell in Bible classes.

A woman was sitting on a bench in the park, and saw a little girl all dressed in rags. She looked ill, and looked like she hadn't had anything to eat for a long time.

As the woman went on with her day, the image of this little girl disturbed her greatly. Finally at the end of the day, the woman angrily threw up her hands and said, "God, why don't you send that girl some help?!"

God replied, "I did. I sent you."

Or another story. A priest was in the middle of a flooding land. The water had risen so high he had climbed up to the roof of his church to escape it. A small boat carrying a few other people came by, and they called to him to get in the boat. The priest replied, "No, go on. God will save me!"

The water was rising again. A larger rescue boat came by and called for him to get in and be rescued. Again the priest replied, "No, go on. God will save me!"

Finally, a rescue helicopter arrived and dropped a ladder down to the priest, around whom water was quickly rising. But again the priest yelled, "No, go on! God will save me!"

When the priest drowned, he stood before God at the gates of heaven and said, "God, why didn't you save me?"

God replied, "I sent you two boats and a helicopter, what more did you want?"

Anyway, the point is that God helps people through other people. He isn't going to magically make food and clothes and money appear for you- but he sends good-hearted, generous people to help. The passage where Jesus speaks about the birds is to ease our own fears for ourselves, that we will be taken care of. (By those same generous people!) But it is our responsibility to care for others as well. We are told "Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me."

And how do you think He does that without our help. I am on a fixed income, but when a need comes up, I give up what I can get along without to help the one who is in need. It is true, God gets the glory, but we get a blessing, which is regarded as one of our rewards in Heaven. It is also working for the Lord while we are on the earth.

Those statements are about faith, and are completely taken out of context from the Sermon on the Mount. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Render unto Caesar's that which is Caesar's, and to God that which is God's. What do you think that means?

Do you even know?

How do you know that God is not doing this work through our hands, through our generocity? When He moves me to give generously I am doing His work. After all, He said love your neighbor as yourself. And for those who don't believe in God, giving to those less fortunate is a good thing to do anyway.

God is speaking of those who trust in Him. If you don't trust in God, you're pretty much on your own. God wants us to help the poor.
