It's often difficult to tell the difference between a demonic oppression and a mental illness. As a Christian counselor we are told to encourage people to seek the advice of a doctor as well as take advantage of Biblical counseling because some things like depression or being bi-polar can be treated by medicine and they don't seem to have any spiritual significance to them.

If the doctors can't find anything physically wrong then it's time to consider a spiritual solution. Is the person born again? If not then they don't have the Holy Spirit of God guarding them against evil spirits. If they are born again then is there any area of unrepented of sin in their lives. When a person knowingly continues to sin they invite evil into their life and God will allow it to come as a form of chastisement that should lead them to repentance.

Hi Zorro,

I'm no expert, but I do know what the scriptures say. Basically, you have two options. Either you are filled up and occupied by the Spirit of God, and are guided by Him in all your thoughts, or not. If you are not, then the door is open to whatever spirit happens to take an interest in you. They seem to prefer the most physically attractive people, because they can do more damage to others through them. Nobody makes much of a fuss over average or below average lookers. By default, if you are not the Child of God, you are a child of darkness, subject to the influences of spirits who want you so miserable and dead, after they are through using you to hurt others. The whole idea of the mad, demonic possession thing, is to throw us off the track. Demons don't want to draw attention to themselves. They just want to make sure you stay as far away from God as possible. Jesus said that the eyes are the window to the soul. I think with a little effort, you should be able to see if the abiding Love of God is within a person or not. If you look into someone's eyes, and you don't feel the Father's love, I guess you are looking into the eyes of darkness.

Technically there is no way to look at someone and see if they have demons. Christians have the capability of having demons in their lives and some of them don't even know it.. There are things that can bring spirits and demons into your house and life. Statues of the virgin mary, different saints, Kwan Yin,, buddha, shiva, carvings of tiki gods, books on the occult, fortune telling, stones and rocks from heathen temples, paintings of roman and other gods, tarot cards, I-ching books, ceramic and macrame' depiction of frogs, owls and dragons, can all bring spirits into your house. There are 59 scriptures in the bible that tell us as christians what rights satan has to invade our life. I would suggest you find you a book on spiritual warfare and read about demons and the kingdom they have and control. I have one, the link is listed below, it has alot of info in it and is a good book. Pure discernment of spirits is a gift from God, according to 1 Corinthians ch 12 v 10, pray for it.
