The best anti-virus software is really a personal opinion. For every person that likes a specific A-V product there will be at least one person who thinks it is crap. One thing you have to consider as well, after using an A-V product for a year, the commercial vendors will charge to keep the subscription going. I would advise keeping the subscription whatever you choose.
In my opinion, the best A-V software is one that I can hardly tell is there. I tried Norton expensive but I like it; Kapersky Free but really a pain in the butt; AVG Free and a good product; McAfee Expensive and crap.
Along with the A-V software you should also get a personal firewall. Firewalls are pretty much the same as A-V - You want one that you can hardly tell is there. Norton's is expensive and OK; McAfee is expensive and crap; Black Ice Defender is meduim priced and excellent; ZoneAlarm is free and good.

NOD 32 is actually the best there is. It has been through the same training course as all other leading Antivirus programs but this one hasn't missed a single thing that has been thrown at it. This test was made by professionals. Although it isn't free, it is extremely good, and hasn't failed me a single time. The warnings are clear and precise and the quarantine is safe. Download it from www.softpedia.com and search around for the NOD fix program, it extends the 30 trail to over 300 years. Enjoy as I am now (doing a virus scan at this moment)

You will never get a definitive answer to this question.
AVG, Avast & Antivir (possibly the top 3 free ones), will all have people subjectively saying one is better than the other.
You will notice I did not include Norton in the above. Many have it because it often comes bundled with a new PC. When its working smoothly then Norton is good. But if you go to forums enough times you will see the amount of computer problems, Norton can & normally does eventually cause, given time.

Follow the link to f-secure and try their on-line scan and then they do a 21 day free trial. They really give you the software free - it's the updates you pay for. It's more expensive than most other products but works much better. they do a family pack of 3 licenses cheap too. If you bank with Barclay's ask them if they can get you a discount. I got a discount for F-secure anti virus and firewall for my desktop and I got the F-secure anti virus for my laptop through Barclay's free until 2007! Free is always my preferred price... LOL

the best anti-virus software at the moment is probally a free program called avast 4.7
i say this as i went to a house to clean a badly infested computer which was running norton anti-virus and spybot, norton was up to date but spybot wasnt
well spybot ,i updated and found 145 entries, and i removed norton and used avast in its place, straight away avast picked up 11 viruses that norton couldnt find ,and this program is free, well the owner of the p.c insisted i kept avast on the p.c and last thing i heard they havent had a infection since
avast 4.7 can be downloaded from http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html,as well as skins and other info on this top anti-virus

First i used Norton 2005, but eventually, i understood that norton is taking so much memory for loading and scanning.
Later, i changed to AVG. But it was only good in detecting and not in healing the virus.
Finally i got this Avast Home Edition and it is the best anti-virus i have ever seen. it is only taking less memory and also it is detecting and killing the virus.
I would surely recommend Avast.
You can download it from

Hi Rich,
I would suggest AVG Pro which you can buy online, you get 2 years for the price of the other one. (anti virus protection only) it's not a security suite
