The last time I was at a formal banquet I made a couple of sandwiches from the dinner rolls and the meat items on the entree. Was this an improper way to eat my meal?

Yes, you should eat your food with a fork and knife. If it is a formal meal that means the provider went through a great deal of work to prepare the meal. Do not insult them by making a quick sandwich.

You eat your food the way you want. Who cares if it is proper or not. Some people were probably wishing that they did that too.
