If you want to keep XP running at the same speed it did when first installed, then you need to perform regular maintenance on Windows.
If there is nothing essential on your pc, I would recommend you just erase the HD and start again. Do some research on how to keep your PC running nice and fast (regular anti-virus/-spyware/-malware scans, regular defrag, clean registry after removing programs, keep up to date, peridocally tidy up %temp% & prefetch, etc etc)

Defragging is always a good idea. If you've never done this expect it to take a while (as in a solid couple of hours, at least).
You could also try to add RAM. Clean up the cache (delete temporary internet files and cookies). Clean up your start-up programs, if you're bogging down at the start-up.

I go with the reinstallation. When I had XP slow to a crawl, I had to reinstall, after all of the previous things I had done to try to cure the problem. In my case, everything else I did turned out to be time wasted.

Delete junk first and then defrag as everyone almost mentioned but also scan your computer for bugs, viruses, worms, etc.
Norton Antivirus
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Good programs.

Add memory and add more RAM to your computer, It is the part of the computer that processes information. When a program is started it is loaded into RAM to be run, so if u have more of that everything will move more quickly.

Forget defrag. Just bak up your data, and reinstall windows. You'll have to re-install all of your programs, but you'll get a good preformance boost.
