$cientology is a moneygrubbing cult based around a lousy fiction written by a lousy science fiction writer.
It claims that human beings are descended from _clams_ (yes, ocean shellfish) and that a being from the planet Xenu will come to Earth one day to collect his followers.
One big difference with most cults, eg. christianity, is that most religions teach their secrets for free, $cientology doesn't. You have to pay scams - oops, scads - of money to learn it's "secrets".

Officially, in the USA, it presently enjoys tax-free status as a religion.
Actually, it is a sythesis of a cult and a multi-level marketing scam. You may see advertisements for Dianetics, the introductory material. A potential scientologist must be cleared of any restraints on their potential, including morality. This is done by auditing the client, and having them tell the auditor all their deepest secrets so they can later be blackmailed, if necessary.
It was invented by L Ron Hubbard, who was kicked out of the Ordo Templi Orientalis, by the one and only Aleister Crowley, who called him a sick little pervert. If you don't know who Crowley was, or what OTO was and is, basically, it is a form of demon-worshipping that to some degree involves sex magick. Crowley referred to himself as "the great beast".
The higher levels of Scientology are levels of Operating Thetan, an allusion that OTO was just the beginning, and should be considered OT0, with Scientology providing initiation into OT1, and at least up to OT8.
NEVER, EVER get on a boat with those people, and avoid any Scientologist in uniform or claiming to be a part of SEA-ORG.
And if anyone ever mentions the word FairGame as a verb, leave town and change your name.

According to the anti-scientology web sites:
A writer researched self-hel stuff in the 1950s when you had to be a doctor or a church
Its non-denominational (you dont have to join or quit your religion)
It teaches courses in things like communications and getting off of drugs
Most people take a couple of the cheaper courses then quit

It's a science fiction club, some would say cult, who decided to call itself a religion to get tax benefits.
When it's "founder" L. Ron Hubbard, the scence fiction author, took his board of directors on a cruise to "celebrate" the end of Scientology he mysteriously fell overboard.
