It depends. If you have sweaty palms, it might just like the salt. Sometimes a dog will lick you as a greeting, after all you won't sniff its butt like you "should" so it has to make a few adjustments to the ritual. Most of the time tho, I think they really do like you.

I've always heard that it was because of the salt on your skin, but it could also be a submissive thing. If you notice dogs together if one is submissive to the other than the submissive one will lick the face of the dominant dog. Since we become part of their pack when they come into our homes, the licking could be to show that they are submissive to their human!

Yes, it is a sign of affection. Our dog licks us all the time, especially before going to bed. It is her habit.

It is a sign that they are challenging your leadership in the "pack order". You need to assert yourself as a compitent strong leader by leading her not to show these signs of defiance.
Other signs of defiance of leadership would be '
- Sitting on your lap
- Putting their paw on your hand or foot
- Constantly walking ahead of you on leash, or trying to change your direction/course.
Dogs are very mysterious. They value a RESPECTED leader above a LOVING leader any day.
