You can do as you want. Then do not bother and tell us about it because people that care and know about animals do not approve of the type of behavior you are doing with your cats. And we know it doesn'tt really work with cats. You may think so but you are wrong. You should not own cats or kids1
Cats ARE social, congregate into colonies and have a sense of social order. Just as with dogs, there is an established "alpha". Your cat or cats will come to recognize you as the "alpha" with a little care and management. To your cat, you are just another cat. Take on the role of leader, and the cat or cats will follow.
Care is the Key
Cats are self-centered and do everything for their own benefit. Knowing this, you now have a tool for managing your cat by becoming the "alpha" in your home-- the secret is care.
If you feed your cats, brush them and clean their litter boxes they will recognize you as the dominant or "alpha" cat. The more you care for a cat, the more it will respect you. If you don't care for the cat, then you're just another member of the colony. To lead, you must be the source of a benefit (food, grooming, etc.) and that benefit must be consistent.
Punishment vs. Management
Many people make three mistakes when dealing with cats:
The cat knows what you mean and want.
The cat will do what you mean and want.
You can punish a cat for bad behavior like you can a human.
This NEVER WORKS! Management DOES.
Punishment is a human concept to control behavior and often involves some degree of pain or deprivation. This will NOT work with a cat. Cats simply avoid pain and won't be deprived.
Management is a way of controlling behavior to arrive at an expected outcome-- preventative or proactive. All animal trainers use management techniques. Management uses strategic thinking and tools to keep order. It is painless and encourages. This always works with cats because cats are endlessly expectant (i.e. cats expect to be fed, to be groomed, etc.) A good manager follows the simple steps of OAR: Observe, Alternative, Reward.

hey what is this about jealous you are at it again you abusing your cats the question is why they never hurt you get some medical help before you really hurt someone it sounds to me you are suffering mental illness cause if you weren't you wouldn't be hurting cats i know who you are and you know me i can do something that will put you away and you know this you sound alot like julie mcclinton who used to live in orillia, ontario, canada a few short months ago jj is fine no thanks to you he got abandon by you end of may 2006 and stuie is on a farm with other cats i hear you have another cat in mississauga ontario canada now the abuse starts again you also believe you are not responsible for fixing your own cats you believe if your cat gets another cat pregnant it is the other person's responsibility not yours even if you have a girl cat you say same thing you are MAD

i do not know you therefore cannot be jealous of you,i read your previous question i dont see anything wrong with making your cats mind, people send their dogs to obedience school to learn proper behavior, why not teach your cats the same,i am sure screaming at and smacking the cat is not nessessary but,not having them climb all over the counters and tables is not a bad thing,i dont want to prepare my food on a counter or eat on a table where fluffy just walked after minutes ago using the bacteria ridden catbox,i can see your point make them behave, but you will get no love on this site by stateing that you hit or scream at your cats, how you reprimand your animals is probably better left unsaid

When you posted your question, I assume you were looking for validation, but when none was forthcoming you got upset. Please understand that noone is 'against' you. You asked a question and people interested in the way pets are treated responded. Animal behaviorists and trainers all seem to agree that an animal (and children, I might add) respond better to positive reinforcement, that is to say they respond better to love and treats when they've done things 'right'. Punishing an animal that is not conscious of right or wrong, good or evil, in short 'amoral' is cruel and in fact does foster aggressive behavior in the animal because they get scared.
We as humans have many activities to occupy us. we have many friends and associates. But the animals in our homes have only us. They are completely dependent on us, and in their own way they love us. It is therefore our duty to assure that they receive what we would expect if we were dependent -proper food, proper medical care, and love. (If not love, at least consideration)

I am not jealous of someone that abuses animals, I have cats and have never laid a finger on them, verbal commands are far better, and I do not mean screaming at them, I mean using a low tone voice and being firm with them. I feel sorry for your animals and hope that someone comes and rescues them from further abuse at your hands.
