there are several ways to remove and install your windows xp.
things to consider:

1. is it an upgrade
2. is it a full install

if it is an upgrade when u remove it, u will return to ur old system, if u have a backup

if it is a full install, u have more options.

a. try the system restore, which restores u to a restore point where ur system is working well, like nothin happen although newer programs, icons may not be reinstalled, u need to reinstall them.

b. when u setup again ur windows there are choices, first choice is repair.. it will repair ur installation to make it work like a full setup, ull be back with all the system programs, icons, etc

c. u may want to reinstall it again, then do the boot cd method, just insert the original win xp cd then it will again setup, when it setups, remove the partition, then reformat, after that u install it in ur pc brandnew, no data on it.

hope it works for u

First try to check the HDD for errors.

Open My Computer.
Right-Click on C: and select Properties.
On the tools tab select error-checking.
Tick the two boxes and press start.
You'll be prompted that error-checking will take place the next time you restart your PC.
Restart your PC and let error-checking do its work.

When the computer restarts again examine if your problems are solved.

(BTW Right-click on the desktop, point to "arrange icons by" and make sure that the option "show desktop icons" is ticked.)

If this does not work back up all your data and reformat your HDD.

To reformat your PC you do not need to erase Win XP. When the re-installing is taking place the installation process removes everything from your PC before re-installing the OS.

No magnets...that can screw up the drive pretty badly. Just do a Repair Install of Windows if you want to reinstall it.
