My experience with my cockatiels was a long constant repeat of one word at a time. His name was Beebo. It took him 9 months from birth to learn to say his name and whistle "Pop Goes the Weasel" Every time I entered the room, I said his name clear and constant. Everyday i whistled the tune and he started picking up on it. He finally started whistling on his own. I had 5 at one time and they each had a different personality and were very smart.

My past tiel spoke clearISH and said pretty bird. My current tiel says pretty bird and is working on Hello. My personal experience is they never speak as clearly as a parrot etc but can say a few words in a chirpy way. It took a couple of weeks to get them talking. Just say whatever.."hello....hello....hello " all day long. Pretty soon the bird will say it. The best way to get them talking is to tape yourself saying the word(s) clearly, over and over, onto a tape or cd..then playing it over and over while you are out of the house. That is how I trained my old tiel.

Cockatiels aren't always willing to talk, but are great whistlers. My cockatiel, Bob Marley, whistles several songs, wolf whistles, and whistles for the dogs-he's pretty funny!

My cockateil says several things, like "pretty bird, hello, dirty bird" and also whistles several songs. His favorite is the Andy Griffith, and the Mickey Mouse club songs.
It didn't take long to teach him since he's young, but you have to be consistent.

Cockatiel are not good talkers. If you are persistent and constant you may eventually get it to talk. Its up to you. Even so it will probably be disappointing as they do not speak loud and well.
