I agree with sassy. If every non-christian on this planet were to go to hell, then there would be no everlasting justice, isn't that what Christains preach? A good man who spent his entire life helping others and never sparing a thought for himself would go to hell merely because he chose to become a Hindu? Please.
I personally don't believe in either heaven or hell. But I have heard it said that there are several levels of hell.
I'm not sure if this is Christianity or Catholism, but isn't refusing god a mortal sin? Completely unforgivable? I'm not sure.
But I guess you could aim for purgatory?

Hell!
Bullshit your friend is a born again bible thumper who needs an adjustment on his spiritual dial from 0 to 100!
Your friend relates to a bible, a bible is man made doctrine and God and the lord’s teachings are not confined to any of it!
God is The Alpha and the Omega (The beginning and the End) he is not confined to the simplicity of a mortals ideals on what is right and wrong and if you don't go to mass you'll burn in hell. I hate conformist’s like that who don't look any further than the pages of their bible and so do not understand what the true love of God is about.
You need to read the Gospel according to Thomas; it is the last words of Jesus Christ shortly before he was crucified. His very own words which Thomas wrote down and the Vatican regarded as heresy! So much so they locked it away in the tombs of the Vatican for the fear it would bring down the church.
These are the words of Jesus Christ...
'The Kingdom of God is inside you and all around you, not in mansions of wood and stone. Split a piece of wood and I am there -- lift a stone and you will find me. These are the hidden sayings that the living Jesus spoke. Whoever discovers the meaning of these sayings shall not taste death.'
So do not fear your friends words, as long as you are a decent person and do right by yourself and others you have nothing to fear, it is all about love and understanding, compassion for your fellow man. And the world you live in. So as for hell only people who choose evil go down that path, remember 'good and evil' are choices we must make, after all God gave us freewill other wise we would simply be one big giant ant farm for him to play with.

Considering that Hell is taken from the words Hades and Sheol which translate to the Grave... and the bible talking about Jesus having been in Sheol for 3 days... we get the impression that there is no eternal damnation by hellfire.
Hell is another word for the common grave of mankind. The bible also talks about Hades and Sheol being emptied out for the resurrection.
Hellfire is a doctrine that has been added without biblical support and is used as a scare tactic by many religions to induce subordination. They inadvertently teach their subjects to serve God out of a dreaded fear rather than out of love.

Actually, if you read Dante he claims that the very center is a frozen lake. Some areas are hot, some cold, some stink, some are full of nasty demons who torture you, etc. The idea is that the punishment should fit the crime, and humans have a terrific capacity to think up new crimes!
One of Dante's areas is actually pretty nice. That is the area reserved for good people who were never exposed to Christianity: The Enlightened Heathens.

Do you believe in unicorns and pixies? They are in many books, and even have movies done about them, but nobody has actually SEEN them or has any proof that they are real. If enough people believe in them will that make them appear? Apparently being born the first time wasn't enough for some people.
At any rate, Hell couldn't be much hotter than Phoenix in July. Dry heat or not, 122 degrees sucks!

Relax. The world in which you believe you reside in IS Hell. Jesus said we live but one life, and christians tend to believe He meant one physical existence, but reincarnation ALSO would be but one life, since you never really die. In other words; there is no hell, save for here, because if hell, as religionists proclaim, is a burning, torturous place, in which you will spend an eternity if you don't "believe", eventually that "hell" would no longer BE hell, but rather, would simply become a way of life; for all that you now know as happiness would increasingly become more of a smaller part of the whole of time, and become like a "dream" to you, as if it never ever really was that way... and even the dream would eventually fade away. For what could be a greater hell, than our earthly existence; to be given false promises, hopes and dreams, only to have them pulled out from under our feet?
God is a perfect creator, and as such all of His creations are also perfect. In other words; we are not like a batch of cookies in the oven of life, such that if we turn out good, God will keep us, and if we turn out bad, He will simply toss us away. For nothing imperfected can ever again be perfect, since it would always contain at least the history of an imperfect past, and nothing that is perfect can ever become imperfected, lest it was not perfect to begin with. Thus either God is perfect, and so are we, or He is not, and if He is not, then He would simply be a glorified ideal of an entity with extra powers; not a "God" worthy of our devotion.
God loved us into existence, in His Image, the Image of Love; not as physical beings in a physical universe. The false belief that we are physical beings in a physical universe is what makes God's words seem only selectively true; for God's words make perfect sense in accordance with our perception of reality being but a dream.

The fire-and-brimstone approach to hell is merely conjecture.
The true hell is the idea that you will never be with God in heaven.
The other problem is that one person's views do not translate over to anotehr person's views.
It's kind of like trying to spend rupee in Africa. Two incompatible monetary systems.
And who is to say that these Christians are right?

Yes there are different types of Hell, and one is sent to one depending upon different types of Sin Committed ...
Its not that all Non Christians GO to Hell and all who have been stamped Christians will go to heaven ...
I know many people who believe in Christ but will not follow his commandments ...and many other religion people who are very pure ...
As far as avoiding Hell is concerned ...
Ask your self this question ...
How can you avoid Going to Jail ??
By knowing the Law and abiding by the Law ...
Similarly you can avoid Going to Gods Jail (Hell) by Knowing the Law of God and abiding by that Law ...

You start off on level 1 with 100 points. They you can get more points and eventually move to level 2 - which is obviously a bit hotter. When you've been there a long time and got loads of loads of points, you eventually get to level 7 which is 230 degrees top-shelf.
