How many Godparents are common to have? Isn't it just 2- a Godmother and a Godfather? Or is it common for some families to have more than this for their child? During a baptism, WHO is it that carries the baby up to the platform where the priest or pastor is standing? Is one of the parents?

One godmother, one godfather. The birth mother usually presents the baby for baptism.

If you have any questions, talk to the priest before everything begins and he'll brief you.

I've only ever heard of having two godparents, but every family does it differently. Some pick a couple to be the godparents, while others pick one member from each side of the family. Having more than two godparents probably came about as an attempt to appease sensitive family members who were lined up to be named godparents.

As far as the baptism, I'm not sure who carries the baby to the platform, though I thought the godparents were with the baby at the time of the actual baptism.

Last I checked, in the Catholic Church, there were 2 Godparents (Dad & Mom). This may be Left up to the parents though, I'm sure.

Important thing is, if the parents are gone, who will take responsibility for the spiritual rearing of the child. I say, The more the merrier, but that's just me.

As for the procession, the parents carry the child & the godparents stand off to the side. But again, the formalities could be changed to fit the parents' wishes.

You should probably talk to your priest about how many Godparents are allowed.

The important thing is that the role of godparent is not some honor that is bestowed on family or friends. The godparents should be devout practicioners of their faith that will be a part of the child's life as the child grows. What is the point of choosing a godparent who will not be aprt of the child's life?

The godparent is there to help the parents raise the child in hte faith. They are also there to support the parents in raising the child in the faith.
