Starcraft - up to 8 players - multiplayer mayhem at its finest.
It was so much fun figuring out the strategies of each race and teaming up with your friends to verbally taunt (we pretended to be smack-talking children) and bum rush the opposing group... and if they survived the rush, you'd be the one at a disadvantage and in danger of being counter-attacked! it was also fun backstabbing your buddies, they didn't mind cause you know they'd backstab you in the next game. I've never killed so many late night hours playing any one video game, especially during the work week.
On a side note, the story behind the Zerg, Protoss, and Marines is pretty good and it's what the Aliens vs Predator movie should have been.

The Tomb Raider series despite Angel of Darkness with its awkward commands and Legend, which seems to have been directed to a juvenile audience. Also because of its great level editor and all the tools created around it that have provived me and many with thousands of amazing games that keep getting better.
The Max Payne series, Alice, Call of Duty, the Broken Sword series, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Mafia, Cold War and a few more are also fantastic.
