Meditation is a way of calming the mind. Some studies have found that meditators are generally healthier, appear to age less fast, and suffer less stress than non-meditators. Generally, it shouldn't be harmful.
However, there was another study done with prisoners who began acting out once they began meditating. Perhaps it was because they were 'facing' themselves for the first time and it was too much to deal with, particularly in a prison setting (just my opinion). This was an unusual reaction. Meditators usually get positive benefits.
The 'inner self' is just another way of saying that you will find the 'true' you, the wise part of the self.
Meditation works for me. It's a nice break in my day, gives me perspective on my life and leaves me feeling refreshed.

First off.... I think you'll need to get rid of the fear before you can effectively do any meditating. As for positive/negative side effects.... Depends on what exercise you're doing. Just give it a try. If it somehow doesn't feel right or comfortable to you, stop doing it.
On the subject of the inner self, think along the lines of your subconscious self. It's getting at that part of you that generates dreams and inspirations.
Some forms of meditation focus on getting in touch with your inner self. Some focus on gaining a greater awareness of the world/universe around you.
As for the Bible thumber answer I saw earlier.... If prayer is talking to God, meditation is a way of listening to Him.

It depends on the kind of meditation you mean.
There is a type of meditation which involves emptying the mind. This may be done by breathing exercises or by repeating a word until it loses all conscious meaning. Both produce relaxed suggestible states. A number of your spiritual defences may go down and you may be open to possession by spirits. You may trigger astral projection in which your astral self is linked to your body only by a silver cord. Under some circumstances this can be cut. You will apparently go into a coma if this happens. It can also result in death.
Another type of meditation is contemplation. This involves thinking about something from all angles. For instance, study a flower, every aspect. It's colour, smell, texture. Examine every part of it and allow yourself to feel the wonder of it. You can do the same with poetry or artworks, clouds, rivers or trees. Just let yourself get lost in it but don't analyse, just take it in emotionally.

relies upon on what you're meditating on. what's your merchandise of meditation? some products of meditation have what are called "nimitta," or signs and warning signs. those are psychological phenomena and are often a precursor to complete absorption (or jhana). in maximum circumstances, they're fairly common (like a ball of sunshine), and that they've a tendency in the direction of being white or clean. they're very worry-loose in breath meditation. yet without understanding your approach of meditation, it fairly is tough to assert greater advantageous than that. EDIT--Breath meditation is especially the type that makes use of a easy nimitta. My advice, once you have an interest, is this. The mutli-colored lights furniture are an illustration that your suggestions continues to be too complicated. enable bypass greater, and it would calm down and stabilize right into a white easy. as quickly as this happens, stick to the middle of the nimitta. do no longer worry approximately shapes and edges and what-no longer. only stick to the middle, and you're able to bypass suited into jhana in the previous long.

I meditate for relaxation, I guess the inner self is looking into your heart and soul and seeing the real you and either bringing it out or leaving it were it is, depending on what effect you think it will have on your life in general, meditation isn't harmful, it is very good for relaxation and helping you see things in a better way, good luck.

I don't think smth bad can happen to you because of meditation.
Just try it !
It might take a lot of practice, don't think you can get to your inner self from your first one, but I heard it's worthy ! As far as I understood, it takes you to a higher and deeper level of understanding and perceptiveness, makes you feel one with the universe and helps you see other dimensions of our life. You get to know places within you you never imagined exist, feelings of happiness and peace that revive your body and soul.
I haven't tried it myself, though I'd like to. Don't have the time, space and mood, but one day I'll surely do it.

Meditation for self realisation is a hard path.It is not easy. You have to learn from a learned teacher(Guru). From mere reading you cannot realise your self. You have to first read Swami Vivekanda's book on Raja Yoga first. The book Autobiograpy of a Yogi is another book worth reading.First you have to learn to concentrate and then meditate. It is harmless.A new world will open when you realise yourself.Welcome to the path.
ISKON centre near to you may be of help.

I'd say be careful, what on earth is your inner self....???
What do you need, don't you know who you are, or what you are... how can you seek advice from yourself. Why are you searching for voices, most people on mental health are seeking to rid themselves of voices or at least shut them up more.
Careful what you seek, it sounds a dark road you are travelling, i would not advise letting go of yourself, grab hold instead and take your conscience with you ie. your instincts your feelings. Belt up, i'd advise christianity brother sounds like you need to tool up before you go delving.
