Don't write her a note, you'll confuse her. Ask some of her friends or just walk up to her and introduce yourself in a polite way and then you can start a conversation which will lead on to the things you really want to know.

Find out your targets' name (let's suggest Tina for this example). Get a friend to call your work phone asking to speak to his girlfriend, Tina. Approach Tina, saying you have "a call for a Tina from her boyfriend and is that her?", hoping she says she doesn't have one!

just ask the person out... if they say yes, then they are probably available.. if they say no, then either they ain't available or they don't like you...
