It depends on what type of adoption it is, really. My husband adopted my son, who was 1 year of age. It cost us about a thousand dollars. We went through Catholic Charities coming into our home, inspecting (making sure everything was baby proof and safe) and asking a ton of questions. We also had to fill out a huge packet of paper asking us everything under the moon. They did criminal history check, including speeding tickets, court dates and verified we were who we said we were. In the end, it worth it though. My husband wouldn't change anything. Our son is his life.

Adoption, the entire process - home studies, finding a child or infant, the legal process - can take anywhere from 6 months to 5 years or more (infants are hard to come by unless going international). Yes, you can adopt an adult or be adopted as an adult.

Adoption all over the world is different from one country to the next. We just adopted a foster child of ours. It takes about a year from start to finish. Going through Children's Aid or child welfare is faster and less expensive than private adoptions. After the age 18 a child is no longer available for adoption so No you can't adopt an adult.

It is a fairly long process with tons of steps. People come to your house to make sure you are suitable, check finances, credit, background, etc....tons more. Not sure on maximum age. If you adopt in the US it's faily inexpenisive(10-20K)...Yes that's thousands. If you adopt over-seas it's way too expensive(30-50K)
