When we got our second dog we had this problem as we had an energetic chocolate lab and 2 established cats. The first dog was no problem and kept her distance but the chocolate lab still tries to play with 1 cat especially. I was very scared the chocolate lab would have her eyes scratched as both cats were terrorised by playful fearless pup. However, after vets and trainers advice I let them get on with it and both have settled extremely well despite a few scrapes and cats madly dashing around the house. One cat has found sanctuaries such as upstairs - on the top of the sofa/ window ledges and spits if the dogs come near. The other cat stands his ground and spits and smacks the dog if he comes near. It is a battle of wills but hopefully will calm down. You can try hissing at the dog when you are annoyed so it understands that this is a warning signal with a "no!" or "leave" when he tries to run after/ play with the cat - always reward if he ignores the cat.

Jack's are notorious about harrassing and killing smaller animals. The best thing is to keep them separated by putting up a child gate. This way, the cat can jump the gate, but normally the jack won't, so the cat can at least get out of harms way.

jacks are notorious for chasing cats. For some it is just in their nature. The best thing to do would be to teach the dog that you are more fun than the cat. Eventualy he should leave the cat be. You dont say who came first...the dog or the cat...that might help, and its age?

Jacks were bred to hunt small furred game.
The cat would be considered small furred game to the Jack.
He is doing exactly what he was bred to do.
Did you not know that they are not good with small animals and most are not good with cats?
You may have to make a choice about who you keep or have some way to seperate them.

Rub catnip on the dog so the cat wants to play with him.

If the cat doesn't get things under control use a squirt bottle when he is harrassing the cat. I have a puppy that is harrassing the big dogs. Once he is soaking wet he will lay down and chew on his toys.

I've had this problem before with my dachshund. When i got him neutered he stopped torturing my cats, and he became more calm. it is a possibility that the jack Russell will become shy and very calm if neutered.

Jack Russels are VERY energetic dogs much the same as staffies ( staffer terriers ) so you need to keep him busy, give him lots of attention and train him to be obedient when you tell him to leave your cat alone.

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.
