The main reason to use Outlook is that it allows you to check multiple e-mail accounts at the same time. If you have five different accounts (and they offer POP3 access - not all do), you can set up Outlook to check them all at once instead of having to go to five different sites to check your email.

Outllok itself does not offer any e-mail accounts. It just allows you to access accounts you have elsewhere. So with Outlook, you still have to set up a Yahoo or other e-mail account. However, since Yahoo does not offer POP3 access to its free e-mail accounts, you can not use Outlook to access Yahoo e-mail unless you get the Yahoo Plus mail for $20 a year.

Also, Outlook allows you to do some fancier things when creating an e-mail, like inserting pictures into the body of your message, or creating and mailing an HTML (webpage) document.
