I mentioned this in your previous question. Leonardo used the Sfumato technique which he invented. It reflects Leonardo's latest research in the erosion of rocks by water, In the landscape behind the sitter we can see the strata eroded by the river. It embodies Leonardo's philosophical thought. the unique things about mona lisa are:

the lack of eyebrows on her face;
her ambiguous smile - you don't know if she's smiling or not;
the uneven background - signifies the male and female - or you could say it's similar to yin and yang;
and the mystery of her gender.

I read somewhere that when the painting was x-rayed (for whatever reason) that they found 3 or 4 other paintings of her under the original...Da Vinci painted her once, didn't like it and then re-painted it several other times

pesence and personality....she's not beautiful...she is more intriguing and self-possessed than anything else!!!and there is always the element that leonardo was painting himself as a woman!!!!and the incongruous smile becomes even more understandable!!
