The cat was my mother's who lives in another city, we eventually visit her every week or 2 weeks. my son loved this cat and he died last week, so he still don't know that he is gone. Now, i know he is too young to understand the concept of death, and i don't want to tell him lies either.

Tell him that the cat has some duties towards his family.
The cat has gone back to meet his family members and now wanna stay with them. I know it sounds funny, but a 2 and a half yr. old kid will definitely understand it.

he's not too young to understand the concept of death. you obviously underestimate young children. tell him the truth and it will spare you all the explaining when something else dies. use the term 'passed away' and tell him the cat went to kitty heaven. also tell him how the cat died to help him understand(ie; the kitty at grandmas house got ran over by a car so he/she's up in heaven now.)

Does a 2 1/2 year old remember something from 2 weeks prior? Don't tell him anything. If he asks, just say "I don't know." You're right, he is too young to understand death so why try to explain it to him?

If you are religious tell him it went to heaven to live with God. If not, then I don't know what you tell him. My daughter had to deal with the lose of her grandfather at 2. She doesn't understand why he went to heaven, but she knows he loves her and is with God. Death is hard to explain to a child so simplify as best you can. It isn't the last time he will need it explained to him, and what you say now will be what you build off of later.

Tell him the truth - a child of that age understands death. There are primary books about this topic, pets dying, but I can't remember the name of one specific one I saw that was very good. Go to your public library and talk with the children's librarian - they should be able to help.

Have you ever read the Rainbow Bridge poem? We used this one when our dog died last year to explain the dog's absence to our son, who was 2 at the time.

This is an easy question. If you don't want to lie to him then guess what you have to do? Tell him the truth.
