adding the years between the births of Adam to Noah then noah to abraham. Abraham to jacob, then going from the year he settled in Egypt to the year of the exodus. Then add the years that Isreal was in in canaan before the division. Then you can count the years from babylon to the current year and you might get the approxamate age of the Earth. I did these calculations some time ago. Earth is less than 7000 years.
I have doubts that this is a good method though.

It is an erroneous method based on adding the ages in the genealogies. It is not valid exegesis and should be ignored.
1. Nothing is said about the length of time man was in the garden of Eden. Adam's "age" seems to begin at the fall rather than creation.
2. There was a known practice to skip "unimportant" people in ancient genealogies.
3. Yom, the Hebrew word "day" can mean extended periods of time.
4. 2 Peter 3:8 Dear friends, here is one thing you must not forget. With the Lord a day is like a thousand years. And a thousand years are like a day... God created time and is not bound by it.

I believe menome b and would favor to characteristic precise the following: a million. Mohammed did not understand Jesus' preparation - Mohammed tried to combine 3 Abrahamic religions at his time (Christianity, an previous Abrahamic relgion and Judaism) yet did not persuade Christians and Jews. He claimed that the bible became most suitable and Jesus became most suitable, yet he claimed that many Christians had fallen asleep or lost their way. This shows that Mohammed in no way actual examine the bible or did not understand that Jesus became the actual image of God himself. not purely a prophet. Jesus became a prophet, yet more effective than a prophet. he's prophet, king, priest and God. So Mohammed can not be extra constructive than Jesus. 2. Muslims haven't any valid evidence that the bible has been altered. Non-Christian and Christian biblical scholars agree that the bible is very nearly fullyyt in its unique type. utilising textual criticism, archeology and historic manuscripts, technology is really positive that the bible we've immediately is in its unique type. in ordinary words some words are in question, yet none of those words replace the which technique of the bible. None of those words replace the actual undeniable truth that Jesus claimed himself to be God. 3. In 1064, Ibn-Khazem, first claimed that the Bible were corrupted and the Bible falsified. What became his reason? the glaring contradiction of Mohammed's words and Jesus' words. Ibn-Khazem used a logical fallacy to make his declare. He had no evidence, his irrational delight led him to this end.

It doesn't, but the bible huggers have their theories, as in the first response, who apparently has it all figured out. How is that possible? How is it possible that the grand canyon was made in 6 days, or that noah collected all the species of animals and distributed them throughout the world. What about the fossils? There is dispute about carbon dating and the like, but either way, is it more believable that an all knowing deity created all of this in 6 days, or is it more believable that this occured over millions of years. Yeah, we can't prove exactly how the world was formed, but i find it hard to swallow that some imaginary parent figure made this planet and all of the known universe in 6 days.

Technically, it does not say that. This, however, is one giant math problem, meaning adding up all the ages of everyone who lived in sequential generations. We know that Jesus lived around 1 AD (for sake of arguement, and there is no need for precise numbers)... about 2000 years have passed since then. It was about another 2000 years from Jesus to Abraham (following lineages), and about another 2000 years from Abraham to Adam (again, following lineages). From this, we know the earth is about 6000 years old (that is, as a rough estimate, without having to actually go and figure who gave birth to whom at what age and how long they lived).
Also, the Jewish calendar starts from, not Jesus' birth, but rather, the creation of the world (again, following the same line of thinking of tracing lineages)... meaning, since the current Jewish calendar year is 5766, that's how old the earth is.

It's not a specific verse, but rather calculated by some religious scholars who added up the lifespans and reigns of various biblical figures, compared historical events to their place in the bible, and otherwise did a lot of very tedious work to come up with the number.

For many
1 day is 1000 years
The creation of God took him 6 days and rested on the 7th
The Adam was created on the 8th
= 8,000 years
now its been about 6,000 years from The Adam
which give us 14,000 years
13,000 for those that think The Adam was on the 6th day (they can't read)

I have been studying the Apocryphal Books, and in the Book of Enoch (who was Noah's great grandfather) He said that the visible world will last 7000 years and at the beginning of the 8000th year, that time will cease to exist. If you would like to check this out for yourself, go to www.sacred-text.com.

It doesn't. Scholars came up with the date through genealogy. Adam and Eve had kids. Their kids had kids and so on. The Bible tells you who had kids, how many kids and how long they lived. So it was just a matter of doing the math. Problem is, who's calender do you use? God created Heaven and Earth in 6 days. Who's day? Our day or God's day?
