If you let the black strip on the back come into contact with a magnet then it will cause the strip it could cause this. Or just getting too old and worn out can cause this too. If you are trying to use your card at a store you can put a plastic bag around your card before you run it through the maghine and it will work.

You may have gotten it close to a magnetic field and erased all the information from that little stripe on the back.

The magnettic strip on the back got zapped by another magnettic source or scratched. It might just also be dirty.
