The sad truth is that because the United States of America is such a large, prosperous, democratic world power, everyone else expects us to be tolerant and generous and benevolent - the feeling is that we can afford to be that way, but other countries can't - it's really quite absurd.

Some of the answers on here are very narrow minded... It's true that it is not a requirement for people entering this country legally to learn English, but most people that live here that are Hispanic do speak English and choose not to.
I speak both English and Spanish and prefer to speak Spanish.

Most countries - including the US - require that an applicant for citizenship speak the language.
And for others who have answered, I know many, many Americans - from businessmen to retirees - who have lived overseas for years and never dreamed of learning the language.

Because demanding to speak English isn't being "considerate or tolerant" to other people's cultures. Screw that. Maybe if some of the illegal immigrants out there took the effort to acclimatize, there wouldn't be so many people being pissed off at their presence.

Who cares! I don't care anymore. If someone moves to my country, and can't speak english, i have nothing to say to you. I lived in germany for 2 years, guess what, i learned german. I also lived in italy, guess what, i spoke italian. It seems like the decent thing to do, but i guess mexicans are too lazy to give a damn, so why should i care about them.

Just shows more of their ignorance. They want to live in the US but don't have the intelligence to even learn English as a second language over there. Go figure they're all nasty looking.
