Okay, so according to mythology, man builds this tower that reaches to the Heavens. (Genesis 11:1-10 KJV) God comes down to the city to "see" the tower. It turns out that God doesn't like the tower because, a. it means that mankind is getting smarter, and b. they are unafraid to use their technology. God then makes mankind speak different languages.
1. So which is higher, the Tower of Babel, or The International Space Station?
2. If The International Space Station is higher than The Tower of Babel, why doesn't God seem to be upset about it? Clearly, it is a better example of mankinds technology than bronze-age housing developements.
3. Why would God have to come down to see the city and the tower? Why couldn't He see it from Heaven?
4. Can God see The International Space Station, or has it just escaped His notice like the Tower of Babel did?
5. How mad do you think He's going to be when He finally realizes we've built The International Space Station?

raven_sunn: I actually do read several versions of the Bible. However, I find that the differences between the various versions tend to get a lot of answers like "Thats not what my Bible says!"
I add the versions I use for a question or answer when I think it's relevant to keep people on the same page. They can read the exact same words I'm reading that way without seeing a completely different message.

excellent question, man.
i personally usually just attack the core of religion rather than the biblical stuff, but i always love reading questions like these. as a linguist who studies mostly philology, the story of babel has always greatly insulted my intelligence., but i never thought of it from this angle before. yeah,,, does god no longer consider tall buildings a threat??
and all of the people who answer with "it's a metaphor" face a new problem. if the story of the tower of babel is just a metaphor, then christians no longer have an explanation as to why there are so many languages.,,, not to mention,,, some of them use this story as an explanation for the different races of man as well.

God did what he did at the tower of Babel for two reasons, one it was because he told man at that time to spread out over the face of the earth and they tried to stay in one place, Babel. The other reason is because at that time man was getting to smart for there own good. I believe that in his minds eye he say the future ability of man intellect and man was far from ready to deal with the consequences of their own technological advances. Much as we are now. Do you know that 2000 years ago that the had batteries in Baghdad, and they for an analog computer that worked with gears inside it. Just think, If man had put the two together then, maybe the Internet would be much, much older than it is now. God only allowed man to develop to the extent that they have now because time is short. The Bible says that once Israel becomes a nation again, that not everyone who is alive at that time will have died before Jesus's second coming. Remember that Israel became a nation in 1948 or 1949.

Ok
before I begin I don't mean to offend you or anything, I'm sorry if I do.
However the story of Babol is a little different from what you are saying.
See God told them not to build anything on a certian spot. For a while they didn't. However we know man, when God says not to do something somebody has to do it.
I have no idea why God waited a little bit to destroy it, maybee he gave messages to people to get rid of it and they did not listen. However I do not know.
But like I said, it wasn't because of how tall it was, but where it was built. Since that time nobody has built anything on that spot.
As for Babylon, that was where everybody lived.
If you think about it the way I think about things. God does not exactly test us in the way we think God does. God gives us choices.
For example the tower of Babol. We had a choice to either live in the same area and have limited technology or we extend our technology to it's greatest level.
Think about it by building this massive tower we were trying to outdue ourselves. The best way to raise technology through the roof is by competing with each other. This is what God gave us, by seperating us.
An easier example is Adam and Eve
Choice A. We live in peace and harmony in a boring exsistance
Choice B. We get to truely experience life.

because it is a hole different thing the tower of Babel was built so man could be like god him self so the rest of man kind would worship him, space exploration is just that man wanting to know more about where we come from. Gods not worried about us finding him or even seeing him be cause man doesn't know what to look for. in the old days angels walked with man and so man knew. that was a whole different time.

"Well let me see."Said the blind man. See there is power in unity it's just something about the #1 that made god see us in a new light. If you notice he put a lot of emphasis on being one like marrige 2 people become one,1 god ,1love,we are all one people. Now that being said look at the word International. To look at that word at first glance you would think it might mean all.Again how many nation are on earth? I don't think all of them have anything to do with the Internstional space station only the rich ones. Which bring us back to the #1 imagine if we all got along here on earth, worked as 1,loved as 1,believed as 1 like 1 giant nation, think 1 rich nation. We would've past space by now, we would be in heaven a long time ago. think about it !!!!!!!!!

You make a lot of wrong misconceptions in your reading. Man had not completed the tower, they were only building it with the intent of becoming a great power and to attract others to the city. They did feel the more people came, the more chance they had of reaching where they believed Heaven to be. Your analogy of the space station is irrelevant as first its intention is not to reach Heaven, and second, you have no clue where Heaven actually is.

It's a question of motives. The people building the tower were doing so to reach heaven. It was an issue of pride. The ISS was not intended to reach heaven. It is not an issue of technology either or we wouldn't be allowed to have computers and yahoo answers. Next the God coming down part. This is called an anthropamorphism. It is a human term used to describe the actions of God. Because we are llimited by our humanity we can only describe God in terms that we can understand. Unfortunately these terms fall short of who God really is and fail to describe Him with accuracy.

is it really that u believe in such fairy tales ?
well , I can answer u this Q. : according to Archeology , the height of the Tower was 91 m , and it was in the shape of "Ziggurate" , the common form of temples in mesopotamia , consist of 7 "stories" and on the top of the 7th , the temple of "Mardock" , the god of babylonians . they ( people of mesopotamia ) used to raise the temples of their gods as high as possible , not to defy a GOD that they didn't believe in , so ,
there was no upset of God ...etc etc . we must distinguish between Archeology and religious superstitions .
