I was only 21yrs old, blonde and American. I started in China, through Vietnam, Cambodia and ended in Thailand. You will be fine I was gone for two months and had no problems. Just need to use common sense. When you get to bangkok just hich a taxi to Ko San Road, they will know what you are talking about. Then you should just find a good place to stay on that road by walking around. If you can't then you will find a foregner that will be more than willing to help you out. God knows that street is filled with them! I stayed just off of Ko San, there is a police station at the end around the corner facing the street that I stayed on. I could show you if I had a map! It was in the back of a nice cafe/resturant. I felt very safe when I was there. Only once I got really wasted and some guy wanted to come up to my room. I didn't want him to so i had to hid in a bathroom! It was funny! Have fun, try to stay in a hostel not a hotel. You will be more likely to meet up with other people if you stay in dorm style rooms.

Just reading the other answers and I have more to add. Don't stay anywhere else than Ko San. It will be very hard for you to meet people. It is not "upscale", I paid 4 bucks a night! Everytime I tried to stay somewhere different in a city I went to I had a hard time. Its hard site seeing all the time on your own. And its fun to meet up with other people or women that are traveling on their own. Its like we have our own club!

Thailand is a fairly safe place. It depends on where you are and at what time of the day.

Khaosan Rd. has gotten a lot more upscale lately. It is still a traveler's best bet, but the places are nicer and the shops in the area are more expensive and cater to the young upper class rather than the hippy nowadays. While it is true that there are plenty of pervy farangs here, they are not interested in harassing a farang girl. There are also quite a few pervy Thais- mostly taxi drivers, policemen, and other people who have the slightest chance to abuse their power. Don't be frightened off by this, because as a foreigner you are probably too tough a mark for them. Most Thai guys prefer to assault teeange girls who don't know anything. But don't let your guard down.

Bangkok is a safe city but I would stay in a proper hotel. Kho Sarn Rd is for tourist - backpackers I would not stay there if I was you. Enjoy Bangkok it is a great city.

It is generally safe to travel in Bangkok. The Thas are very nice people, it is the farangs or foreigners that you need to be wary about. These are the ones that prey on people.

Khao San area tends to be a favourite for backpackers and tourists. I would recommend that you stay in other part of the city like in Silom, Sukhumvit, Phayathai where you are much closer to the main shopping streets. And the pervs are the farangs or visitors!

You have gotten a lot of good guidance. I would just add this - I urge you to get some good travel insurance. There is an amazing variety of things that can go wrong to ruin a trip in an instant. You can explore the subject and buy on-line too if that suits you. Many veteran travelers feel it is best to get travel insurance from a source different from that for transport arrangements – no chance for a conflict of interest. Here is a really neat site that is easy to use and provides a variety of options. I like Travel Guard International’s “Worldwide Health”. Travel Guard is the industry leader for good reason. They deliver quality service at a modest price. The policy provides coverage for health-related issues (like an illness in a foreign country) and for traveling-related issues (like lost baggage etc.) IMG is also a good supplier but not as big as TG. Go to http://www.wavehelp.com/travel-medical/index.htm and click on the red phone booth to see the details.

Best wishes.

bangkok is a safe place. no worries travelling alone here. i wouldnt recommend you to stay at khao sarn road if you're heading here alone. it's a tourist place and yeah, with tons of international perves, but if you really wish to stay there i'd like to recommend you to stay at khao sarn inn as it's the best hotel around there. i'd stayed there once and it caused no complaints or you can check out www.excelloz.com for more info about the hotels in khao sarn or www.thailand-travel-info.blogspot.com. have a safe trip!

I just got back from Bangkok. It's a great city, lively. Though I went there with my friends, I think you could still have a safe trip alone. You just have to be very careful. Travel wise, don't wear jewelery, keep your passport in safedeposit in hotel, bring with you only the copy of it, keep your money in separate places, wear decent clothes. For a safer transport, you could take BTS (monorail) or taxi. If you get in the taxi from hotel, it's safer because good hotel usually keep records of those taxis. Use Taxi meter, because they could cheat you if you don't. If your hotel has a website, print the map of the location and give it to the driver, because they usually don't speak fluent english. Enjoy your trip.
