I comes from the Hebrew word "hawyaw" which means the Becoming One. God is the Becoming One as He is whatever we need Him to be. He becomes a Father to the Fatherless a Husband to the widow a counselor to the lost a Savior to the sinner a caretaker for the forgotten. He is whatever we need Him to be.

Ancient written Hebrew did not contain vowels. So in ancient Hebrew, the name was written "YHWH." The exact pronounciation and therefore, the exact meaning has been lost since the days of the temple, as only the High Priest was allowed to speak the name once a year on Yom Kippur, while standing in the Holy of Holies.

What we do know is that YHWH is an archaic form of the verb "To Be."

Your translation of I am That I am, is only one of several translations of this word. The Philosopher Martin Buber translated YHWH as meaning, "I will be with you," while others have (very seriously) interpreted it to mean, "it's none of your business who I am."

Your given version was offered by Thomas Aquinas who stated that the name implies "Is-ness," or "being-ness." He argued that God, therefore, is the only being whose actual essense IS existence.

You and I merely "possess" existence; But Aquinas argued that God "is" existence, and that that is the true meaning of his name. In other words, that God is saying, "I Am Existence."

Hope this helps.

It pretty much means that God is God. There is no other way to explain it.

See a lot of people expect God to be many different things. When God is just God, nothing more then that.

God is not a genie that grants wishes.
God is not a miracle worker that sends miracles here and there.
I can keep going with what God is not, however I think you can see where I'm going with this.

The truth is God is are ultimate parent. God created us, gives us advice if we listen to God, tries to keep us safe from evil (unfortunatly most of us don't listen to God), gives us everything we truelly need, ect. ect.

If God was any of the other things we think God is; God would be breaking the only law God gave him/herself. Free will

If you want a good example of what God truelly is; see the movie Bruce almighty. Yes, even though it shows a miracle at the end of it, it really wasn't God doing it. It was man.

What more is to be said of God then God is God.

Sometimes it is translated as ; 'I shall prove to be what I shall prove to be.'

There will be times when God will take action, like he did in delivering the Israelites from the Egyptians, Sodom and Gomorrah, the flood of Noah's day, and like he will soon at the great tribulation and later at Armageddon.

Besides judgments he will prove to be the giver of Holy Spirit to his worshipers, and give them blessings beyond compare in his Kingdom.

1Corinthians 2:9 But just as it is written; "Eye has not seen and ear has not heard, neither have there been conceived in the heart of man, the things God has in store for those who love him.'
