I did not find your father on the LDS website, which is a good thing, because they typically post all SSNs when someone passes away. That is good news.
The PAY site, for Private Eye says they have records. I would hold off on paying for information until you exhaust your other answers, given here.
The 3rd web site is a Search on Yahoo for CLANTON FAMILY TN and it turned up over 10 pages of leads. There may be a lot to weed out there.
This may not help now, but if you get your Birth Certificate, and your father is listed, it will give his birth place. That should narrow down his age ( if he is on your certificate, I know this sometimes does not happen). Then, use that information if you get it, to get his Birth Certificate. See the Website for getting Birth Certificates. Get the divorce records you mentioned too. These are tangible pieces of evidence that may give clues that you do not have now.
If you keep working at this it is most likely you will find him.

There are (3) James Clantons who have criminal records in Tennessee, but their middle names are different.
James Edward Clanton dob 8/19/1945 died in prison
James W Clanton dob 2/20/1977 is pending parole
James Wesley Clanton dob 5/31/1966 was paroled in 1997.
The thing you're missing that would make this much easier is his DOB. You can get that by going down to the County Clerk's office in the county where they were married and getting a copy of their marriage certificate.
The other thing to check, if your mother is willing, is his Social Security records. Somewhere, she had to have used his SSN. She could get it by requesting a copy of their joint tax return, if one was filed, any orders for child support...something. Then you can spend the $30 to get a report on everywhere he's worked in the last 20 years.
I did a search on Zabasearch for James M. Clanton and can't find any in Tennessee, but there are many who are the right age and they live in the same region of the country, such as Austin TX, Stephens AR, Statesville NC, Candler NC, Pearl MS, Tuscaloosa AL, Batesville MS, Jonesville LA, Jackson MS, etc. You can look them up yourself by going to www.zabasearch.com.
Zaba also lists several Nancy Clantons in Tennessee. It's very possible that Tyler is her maiden name, not her middle name on her birth certificate. Again, this is a question that should be answered if you get a copy of your parents' marriage license.
You really do have a lot of information to work with, you're just missing the piece that will make this easy. BTW, the other way to get all of this information is to find out where he was arrested and prosecuted and get a copy of his records under the Freedom of Information Act. It's not cheap, but it is easy. You'll need to have basic information on him, such as Name, Age, etc.
Some of that should be on your own birth certificate. If it was removed by adoption, you can still get it from the hospital where you were born by sending in a record release for the records from your birth. They prefer that you send these to a family doctor, so that would be the best place to go for help. But your parents will have it all disclosed (and probably his SSN too) on the admitting record. Don't tell them that you want the record to find someone, just that you need it for medical treatment purposes.

First, you shouldn't give out your full name and exact DOB on the Internet.
The SSA will forward a letter to him if you have, or can get, his SSN. They will try even if you don't have his SSN, if you have enough particulars; it looks like you do. Read more:

He may not have a current address with the SSA, and he may not want to write back, so it isn't foolproof.

I don't know your father but have you tried ringing a police station in Memphis? If he has a criminal record then they'll definiately have information on him. Maybe not he's whereabouts but its a good start.

First I would help myself by working where I last known him to be, you already have the Internet so get the white pages and start from there, call each Clanton, that name will pop up soon! (Unusual) Then go Memplhis TN Criminal Section on the Internet and scout it out yourself. Find out from the Internet how many police departments Memphis has, and get some envelopes and start writing/calling it will work. Memplhis is small you'll find him quick! With the quickness!
I found mine, it all started with one phone call, and from there it was on, I found him in 3 days tops! Eastman GA. . . .
