They are stalling for time to develop nuclear weapons. Once they do that they can work on a delivery system or give nukes to a terrorist organization.
They will then use the weapons to blackmail the US or they will use the weapons to set off Mahmoud Ahmedinijad's vision of the Apocalypse and bring back the Mahdi (the 12th Imam).
They are not looking to defeat the US militarily. They are looking to back us down or set the world aflame.

I'm afraid that the real question is does America have the guts to take on Iran?
It's true that Iran wants to gain hegemony in the Middle East but it, certainly, does not want to launch aggression against America per se. On the other hand, America sees it's ME oil interests threatened. Is there room for compromise? ( I think that Iran is much more pragmatic than most.) Given the U.S. cowboy mentality, we may never know, but Iran is a much tougher adversary than any that we have recently faced. U.S. be careful.

it's not a matter of guts, it's a matter of this man is crazy and is still back in his rebellious days. he is leading iran into deep stuff, and dosn't get it.somebody there had better get it, because there is only a short way he will be allowed to go before he brings problems down on his country. if he takes it to the point that there is no backing off, iran will wish they had stopped him before it got to that point. he may be enriching uranium, but we did long ago and realised we never wanted to use it again. if he poses such a threat however, who knows what will happen? other leaders there need to get rid of him, because he threatens the saftey of iran.

I really do not think that they do. In their hearts, i truly believe that would love to try us, but, cooler heads will prevail. Contrary to popular belief, the military is not so spread thin as the media is saying. If anything were to go down, the US would rain down on Iran as they did initially in Iraq. It would be another 100 hour war, because it would be conventional, not a guerilla war. There is no way iran could stand up to the US head to head.

if Iran attacks, it won't stand alone. the entire middle east and N Africa will be with them. and Russia, do you think that they've been giving them weapons all this time, and are gonna sit back if the US attacks. and you won't have the support of Europe either, there oil supply from Iraq was already cut off short, do you think there gonna sit back again... except of course for the idiot Brits
