It's not heavier, it's just typically more complex and has more flavour. I can't tell you how it tastes because a 2006 Charles Shaw Cabernet will taste worlds different than a 1988 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet. A 2000 Barolo will taste worlds different than a 2000 Merlot. A port will taste worlds different than a late harvest Pinot Noir.

And white wine it *not* usually sweet, contrary to answers here. White wine can be virtually all the things that red wine can be - dry, earthy, fruity, oaky, vanilla-y, etc. It can be sweet, especially things like Muscats, Semillons, Reislings, and late harvests, but it can also be grassy, tart, and clean, like some Pinot Gris, Chablis, Chardonnay, and Chenin or Fume Blanc.

Your best bet is to find a local place that does wine tastings and start going to them. Keep a journal of what you tasted and what you did or didn't like about it. Ask for the host's help in deciphering what you are tasting. This can help educate you as to what you want to buy in the future! : )

Depends on the wine. Red wine is red because they let the skin of the grape in the wine during the process of making wine. So white wine can be made from the same grapes as red wine.

Red wine is heavier than white wine. It has a deeper flavor. Read the labels of the red wines bottles if you decide to try red wine. They have flavors of cherries, oak and other dark fruits, I believe, whereas white wines have flavors of pear, peach and other light colored fruits. At least that's what I've noticed.

It depends on which wine you try as to what it tastes like specifically. I prefer red wine because it has a stronger and subtly bitter taste in my opinion ...

Definitely heavier than white wine and a little dryer too.

White wine is usually sweeter (too sweet for me). Red is an adult, acquired taste (as is white I guess), that I really enjoy. You sip it, you dont' gulp it, and how could I describe it? Probably a bitter start if you've never tried it before, but then it feels good on your tongue. It's not like beer, juice, milk or soda.

"Heavier" isn't quite the word. Darker, earthier, more tannic. More complex. Of course, it all depends on which red wine you choose.
