there are several non-verbal ways of saying hello, like a smile and a nod. or a wave of the hand. or a simplified salute. the smile-and-nod method is universal. it's neither overly intimate nor rude.

I usually say Moin Moin (dialect northern Germany) in the during the day and Servus (dialect Bayern) after six p.m. People get a kick out of it because I live in Sachsen-Anhalt.

I usualy say "Hey!" I believe that some Native Americans say Yah Ta Hey to each other, I always wondered If Hey came from that?
