A romantic dinner. Movies are good, too, but I kinda would rather be someplace where I could chat with my date and get to know them better.

Two things to consider on setting up a good first date: budget and fun-factor. Of course, during initial interactions, you aren't expected (or, at least, you shouldn't be) to give an arm for a first date. So, I agree - a coffee shop, where you can talk and decide, then, if you want to pursue your interest further. You'll shell-out, at most, $10, unless you go to Star-"take all my money"-bucks.

Conversely, however, I would suggest, for a first date, to create similar outcomes as a coffee shop date, but also increases the heartrate (hence, attraction). Therefore, plan on spending maybe $20-$25 on bowling, miniature golfing/arcading...anything that can get the heart thumping and is fun, at the same time. No amusement park, though - save this for later.

A picnic under the stars, over-looking the city with it's many lights. A blanket to sit on and another one to cuddle up in, just in case it is cold.

Dining at a cosy restaurant, followed by chilling out at a lounge or pub and being sent back before 1am by his company to my doorstep with a goodbye kiss..

a good dinner, not necessarily expensive but a decent meal at least. Coffee after... Then talk until the sun goes up.
