less than 10 percent by Mexico (10%pickers-less10% other farm related)--the other 90% of the farms say your welcome. We don't need you -you need us. Be nice

"Phillip Martin, an economist at the University of California, Davis, has demolished the argument that a crackdown on illegals would ruin it, or be a hardship to consumers. Most farming — livestock, grains, etc. — doesn't heavily rely on hired workers. Only about 20 percent of the farm sector does, chiefly those areas involving fresh fruit and vegetables.

The average "consumer unit" in the U.S. spends $7 a week on fresh fruit and vegetables, less than is spent on alcohol, according to Martin. On a $1 head of lettuce, the farm worker gets about 6 or 7 cents, roughly 1/15th of the retail price. Even a big run-up in the cost of labor can't hit the consumer very hard.

Martin recalls that the end of the bracero guest-worker program in the mid-1960s caused a one-year 40 percent wage increase for the United Farm Workers Union. A similar wage increase for legal farm workers today would work out to about a 10-dollar-a-year increase in the average family's bill for fruit and vegetables. Another thing happened with the end of the bracero program: The processed-tomato industry, which was heavily dependent on guest workers and was supposed to be devastated by their absence, learned how to mechanize and became more productive."

If every illegal alien here today currently left America, the immediate economic impact would be insignificant and over the long haul, the impact would likely be negligible.

I know who DIDN'T pick them - thousands of Americans who are unemployed because of the number of industries that are glutted with illegals. Maybe if there weren't so many illegals jumping in there for two dollars an hour, more American citizens could take these jobs.

I'm with DAR here. Can the illegals say "Thank you!" for all the freebies they are scamming us for? How about a great big "Thank you" for their free medical care at the ERs (as they are causing many hospitals to have to close, due to their nonpayment for services), how about for the free education of their children? How about for their food stamps? I think they owe some mighty big "Thank yous!" to legal citizens of the USA rather than us to THEM!

Personally, I never asked them to come pick my fruits and veggies, in the first place. And, I can guarantee you that I will continue eating fruits and veggies at a very reasonable price, even after the illegal immigrants are gone. The reason for this is that American citizens will pick those fruits and veggies when the illegals are gone because the scamming employers will be forced to pay a decent wage and have to reduce the amount of profit that they are pocketing for themselves off the sweat of their slave labor illegal immigrants and, believe it or not, reports have proven that the cost of our fruits and veggies will NOT drastically increase without slave labor picking them. As well, many employers will use machinery that is available to do this work even now, but the cheap employers are putting off buying the machinery while they have slave labor to do the work, knowing that the taxpaying citizens presently subsidize the slave wages they pay, in the form of social benefits due to the illegals having such poor pay.

What I don't get is why you even CONDONE this for yourself and your people??!! Don't you understand that your people who work for these slave wages as illegals are vulnerable to being used and abused by their employers? That your people have NO recourse when their employers cheat them on their wages? Why do you want your people to work 10 and 12 hour days for slave wages? Don't you have any pride? Don't you even understand that when your people work for slave wages and have to live 20 or more to a residence designed for 4 people in order to survive on these slave wages and still have a few bucks to send back home to their families, and that when they have to rely on handouts in the form of free medical care and food stamps, etc., that they can have ABSOLUTELY NO PRIDE in themselves? That they HAVE to feel like they are the bottom feeders in this society? Why don't you want BETTER for your people than this??? They cannot have any real respect for themselves when they come through the "back door" into our country as unwelcome "guests." And because they have no respect for themselves, how can anyone else?

You speak as if from expeirience. I'll say "Thank You" when I can get a better job with out having to be bilingual, go to the store without getting hit by an illegal that has no insurance, when the two Mexican kids who threw a rock at me for wearing something that had an American Flag on it apologize, and when the illegals stop waving the Mexican flag at thier rallys (If you want to be here, then show it by waving the proper flag).

Listen, we all have jobs and in all jobs there can be illegal people working. You never know. Why do you think its just the fruits and the vegetables? Why do we need to say thank you? Do you say thank you to everyone that does a job that indirectly serves you?

Employers/Illegal Aliens

Do you know of someone who routinely employs illegal aliens in his or her business?

Have you been laid off, only to see your job be given to an illegal alien?

Have you lost your business or a contract to someone who was able to underbid you because he or she employs illegal aliens?

Do you work in a company that has recently adopted a policy of hiring illegals, or of refusing to use due diligence in checking identification before hiring?

Employing illegal aliens is a federal crime and we'd like to know about it so we can forward such information to the authorities.  If you have knowledge of employers in your state breaking the law, please contact the following sites:
