Because the plane goes too fast and too high.
Jumping out of the plane at 30,000 ft you'd be dead just about instantly from the -40 degree temperature, plus going about 500 mph, could be a tad difficult as well.

It is hard enough to get out of an airliner on the ground when the plane is standing still at the gate now imagine 300 idiots that did not listen to the flight attendant's briefing trying to figure out how to use a parachute for the first time then imagine that the airplane is moving around tossing you up and down and back and front now we come to the fact that in a pressurized aircraft you can not open the doors until it is depressurized oh yeah and you are flying at 400 MPH hope you don't hit the tail on your way out. More people would die attempting to exit the aircraft than if they rode it in during an emergency landing!!!! As for the guy who mentioned ejection pods your just an idiot if every passenger had an ejection pod the plane would weigh too much it would never get off the ground and if it did manage to get off the ground its performance would be so badly degraded it would be more likely to crash.

It would add too much weight, take too much space and there would never be enought time to put them on. A plane problem big enought to crash a jetliner happens so fast....well it's not like a sinking ship. More like a sinking rock!
Think about it. Have you ever heard of a parachuter jumping out of a crashing plane? The only ones I hear about are parachuters jumping out of perfectly good planes!

there was an interesting concept in either popular mechanics or science where they had a jetisonable passenger cabin attached to ballistic parachutes so that the passengers would be "deplaned" from an aircraft in an eminent danger of crashing. I have heard nothing as to if it would ever be actually built and tested. It's not as crazy as most people think, anyone in an aircraft that is going to crash would like to have an option! The main problem is as most here have already pointed out is the welfare of the untrained passenger.

Have you ever seen military parachute operations? You need a jumpmaster to coordinate the exit of trained men under controlled conditions, most airline passengers would panic.
But the real problem is that over 90% of all aircraft accidents occur during take-off and landing phases of flight, so parachutes would really be useless.

Hi,,, because usually the plane is going down in a frontal spin of some sort,, and you can not get to a door to jump out of... and then,, if you could ,, somepeople would panic and not jump.... so , it makes for a good idea... but not practical....i wish it were...
good luck

Because planes go too high and too fast. The parachutes wouldn't be able to handle the high altitudes or speeds. They'd rip to shreds.

ummm....because at 36000+ feet jumping out of a plane in a parachute without porper attire means you will be frozen dinner for vultures.

can you see the commotion of 200 people trying to one on? We can't even get them to watch how to put on the oxygen. Oh and do the pilots jump out also?
