All humans have a 90-minute sleep cycle. For men, there is also an erection within that sleep cycle, often near the end of it. Since many people wake at the end of a group of sleep cycles, totaling 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9, etc. hours, then you can see where the "firm" decision to wake up occurs.

Some men have their erection in mid-cycle, and if awoken by an alarm, will find an erection -- or not -- depending on the actual timing.

Little known fact : Urologists test for ED -- erectile dysfunction -- by having you lick two stamps and sticking them near the head of your penis before sleep. The idea is that, since all men get erect during sleep, you will awaken with the perforations between the two stamps ripped apart. If there is an actual physiological problem -- not just stress/pressure/anxiety etc. -- then the stamps will be unchanged in the morning.

Interesting if weird -- makes you wonder who started THAT one...

It does it because your body is trying to stretch out and relieve some pressure of all the urine from a night of not being able to pee. Its stands cuz you hafta pee not because it wants some action. Although I'm sure it wouldn't mind.

To avoid injury while you're waking up--seriously,,,somewhat. You have erections during various sleep periods. the best explanation (it's really just a theory) is that it protects your organ from becoming twisted and losing its blood supply.

I've been told that it's because you need a wee, but whether that's true or not, I don't know!
Maybe you try all the options, and then you'll find out.

this answer is a bit boring compared to the others, but when you're bladder fills and you're lying down it presses on the prostate gland which gives you the horn.
