That's because of lactic acid accumulation and increased blood flow during exericse. As the buildup of the lactic acid decreases, the cramps in the muscle go down too but the blood flow increase lasts a while. That's why your legs look and feel bigger after tennis and recover after you get some rest.

The bigger muscles doesn't have to do with the soreness, muscles always look bigger after exercise because the blood flow has expanded the muscles. Body builders usually do some quick push ups right before going on stage to make them look bigger. The soreness could be due to the increase blood flow but muscles do not need to be sore to look bigger, and if they are sore they may not always look larger. hope this helps.

The 'swelling' is a normal indication of stressed muscles, due to blood flow and associated phenomena; keep the feet raised while resting, after cold water treatment. Your work-up, in whatever form, should be gradual, not abrupt.

Actually, soreness makes the muscles get smaller. It is in the overcompensation phase that they recover and then get bigger.
