I am happy that I can vote and probably won't die in childbirth! I am also very happy that slavery was abolished, and I can pursue higher education.

If everyone works together to ensure the future will be better, I feel that we can make a difference.

I think that's an interesting question, but who can say, really? I think we are a generation that expects more than any generation ever has. We think we should have the best of everything, and immediately, please. I think our expectations lead to more dissatisfaction, and the media puts in our heads all the things we should have, and don't.

So, I don't know what to say. When people had less and didn't know any better, perhaps they weren't so dissatisifed? Maybe they found simple pleasure enough?

Hard to say, but it's a good question.

You are absolutely right.

Just imagine how wonderful life could be if we all had to hike to the nearest well or spring to fill jars with water and carry them back home every day. It would also be a true blessing for us to have to harvest grain with hand scythes and store it in the basement where it would be infested with rats until we got around to eating it. We would all be much happier if we didn't have soap, toilet paper, or deodorant. Life without antibiotics to treat infectious diseases would be pure bliss.

Oh, wait ... maybe not ...

i believe that life is what you want it to be, it's all about perspective
there are many people nowadays that are not content with their lives because they compare themselves to others around them and think they don't have enough, this is more prevalent than in the old days because of media, television etc
but i think that we have more opportunities nowadays to pursue our dreams, and with the information age, true enlightenment is more readily found
people are unhappy because there is so much choice these days that they don't even know where to begin, the possibilities are endless, and so are our interests- this week i want to be a musician, next week a journalist, the week after a marine biologist
where do we focus our energy?

They had to deal with a lot more hardship, so they were probably able to handle difficulties in life better, and that makes it appear as if they were happier. In reality, our generation is just a bunch of emo p*ssies, who cry when the police taser us for being stupid.

Our health is better, we live longer, our work is not as arduous or dangerous, we have more leisure time. We have it better.

If I am not happier than my grandfather, who came here in steerage, or the one that walked the Trail of Tears, its my own fault.

guess there's no definite answer for that. sure, they didn't have the conveniences of modern times like us; they had to do with whatever they had to survive. and if they've done good at the end of the day, even without modern-day conveniences, they must have been happy. just like us today--we do have those conveniences, but it doesn't necessarily equate to happiness, does it?
