When you exercise your muscles they have to perform more work and in the process the muscle cells produce an abundance of lactic acid - especially in anaerobic exercise. An excess of lactic acid causes pain. That is why stretching before and afterwards helps to reduce muscle pain.

I am not a physiologist so my answer may be somewhat simplistic.

Personally,I have a muscle disease that causes me pain.
I would have to know more about your pain to answer your question.

overuse, sprain, strain, stress, exercise, lack of exercise.. you name it.

most anything can cause muscle pain. consult a doctor for specifics.

Some medicatons can cause it, like some anti-cholesterol meds
